DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - In a preview to the 2014 Loras College football season, the Duhawks took down Concordia University Wisconsin by a score of 13-10 in a two-quarter scrimmage Saturday afternoon in the Rock Bowl. The Duhawks limited the defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference champions to very few opportunities throughout the afternoon.
Concordia Wisconsin struck first on a David Gonzalez field goal, but soon after the Duhawks knotted the score at three as freshman
Mason Quigley converted a 39-yard field goal of his own. The Falcons would retake the lead after a long drive that resulted in a rushing touchdown. After another Quigley field goal, the Duhawks would score the winning touchdown after a run by sophomore Zach Tade.
The Duhawk offense looked balanced and fluid, as it was their first look against another team as they continue to learn new offensive coordinator
Jake Olsen's system. With added depth at all positions, the 2014 offense looks promising to become a threat in the Iowa Conference.
On the defensive side of the ball, the team was led by junior
Wes Bowers as he hauled in the only turnover of the afternoon with an interception. Throughout the scrimmage the Duhawks swarmed to the ball and pressured the Concordia Wisconsin quarterbacks.
The
Steve Helminiak era begins next weekend as they take on Elmhurst College in the Rock Bowl at 1 p.m. During halftime, Loras will induct its 2014 Hall of Fame class and recognize them for their athletic contributions to the College
