INDIANAPOLIS (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's soccer team advanced to their 11th consecutive NCAA Tournament after defeating University of Dubuque last Friday, 1-nil. On Monday, the Duhawks learned of their draw in the 2015 NCAA Men's Soccer Championships, earning a bye in the first round.
For the third time in program history, Loras earned a first round bye (2007, 2013, 2015) following their 14-4-1 season and finishing the year atop the rankings in the North Region. The Duhawks, led by Head Coach
Dan Rothert will play the winner of Ohio Northern (17-4-1) and Carthage (11-7-3), who will play in a first round game on Thursday, Nov. 12. The Regional Championship will be held in the Rock Bowl on Sunday, Nov. 15.
Loras is one of six teams from the North Region to earn bids, with three coming via the 'Pool A' automatic bid, one via the 'Pool B' bid and two via the 'Pool C' at-large bids.
The Duhawks will host the winner of Ohio Northern and Carthage in the Regional Championship on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. Those two sides will play on Thursday in Ada, Ohio in the Regional Semifinal.
Loras enters the NCAA Tournament after winning their 11th Iowa Conference Regular Season Championship.
Ohio Northern entered the tournament with the automatic bid from the Ohio Athletic Conference, advancing past John Carroll on penalties. The Polar Bears are 12-1-1 over their last 14 games, dating back to Sept. 22, but were not included in the final rankings for the Great Lakes Region. This season, Ohio Northern is 1-2-0 against regionally ranked opponents and have a .490 strength of schedule.
The last time the Duhawks faced Ohio Northern was in the Sectional Championship in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, with Loras earning their second consecutive trip to the Final Four with a 4-1 win. Miguel Bonilla and
Justin McCord each recorded a brace for the Duhawks in the win.
Carthage won the CCIW Tournament with a 3-1 decision over North Central. The Red Men were not ranked in the North Region and enter the NCAA Tournament with a 1-3-2 record against ranked opponents and a .544 strength of schedule.
Loras' last meeting against Carthage came in Sept. 2010, with the Red Men scoring the winner in extra time to hand Loras the loss.
