One of the school's first athletic directors, Heitkamp set the ideals for good sportsmanship and a Christian community when taking over as athletic director in 1925.
Not only a guiding source at Loras, Heitkamp served as the president of the Iowa Conference in 1927 and 1928.
A top educator in the physics department at Loras for 50 years, Heitkamp also has the Heitkamp Planetarium and Observatory on campus named after him for his dedication to the college.
