DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – The Loras Women's Basketball team added to their winning streak on Wednesday night, following Saturday's thriller over No. 25 Luther. The Duhawks (11-7, 5-2) defended their home court against Wartburg, winning 62-58. Junior
Kaitlin Phillips recorded her second consecutive 20-point game, finishing with 21 points and five assists.
It took nearly two minutes to register the first basket of the game as both teams came out with high energy, but a poor final touch. The sides traded baskets for the first 12 minutes, with neither team able to pull away.
With 8:44 to play, the Duhawks made their move, going on a 7-2 run during the next four minutes, pushing their lead to 31-20. Despite being down, the Knights refused to give in, answering back with 3-pointers from Morgan Neuendorf and Miranda Murphy.
Nonetheless, Loras remained in control, ending the half with a 36-26 lead.
Kaitlin Phillips led all scorers with 13 points and added four rebounds, including 3-of-3 from distance.
The second half played out much like the first, with Loras controlling the tempo and the lead.
Trailing by eight with just under six minutes to play, Wartburg kicked their offense into high gear, and went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the night, 55-54.
With pressure lingering the Duhawks never cracked.
Sophomore
Naomi Phillips showcased her long-range ability, going 3-for-3 from the floor on the night and burying a 3-pointer with 3:03 to play, putting Loras back in front 57-55.
With the clock ticking down, the Duhawks did not miss a chance they could sinking free throw after free throw.
Leading by two with nine seconds left, sophomore
Lori Obendorf went to the line for the double-bonus. While just a 66 percent free-throw shooter heading into Wednesday night, the Naperville, Illinois native gave Loras the insurance points they needed, sinking both free-throws and sealing the win for the Duhawks, 62-58.
