Swim and Dive Cruises Past Simpson in Home Dual Meet

Nov. 19, 2021 - After a trio of dual meets on the road, the Loras College men's and women's swim and dive teams returned to San Jose Pool to take on the Simpson College Storm in an American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) meet. The Duhawks rolled past the Storm with the men taking a comfortable 163-27 victory while the women posted a 114-92 win. 

Nina Schiro, Artie Kerchmar, Amber Forbort and Mollly Strohmeyer got the meet started in the 200 yard medley relay, winning by a five second margin with a 2:01.17 final time. In the men's race, Kevin McMilla, Brian Day, Brad LaGrange and Charles Holmes earned 11 points for the Duhawks with a first place finish in 1:48.05, narrowly beating teammates Jon Broas, Payton Markowski, Noah James and Austin Jorgensen who finished in 1:48.37. 

Strohmeyer and Taylor Hrabak picked up 13 points for Loras as the only two competitors is the women's 1,000 yard freestyle with Strohmeyer posting a finishing time of 12:34.34 and Hrabak finishing in 12:34.82. 

In the women's 200 yard freestyle, Schiro picked up a second place finish with a final time of 2:08.12 with Simpson's Bre Hinson narrowly escaping with the win with a finishing time of 2:08.05. In the men's race, Christopher Grunke finished second for the Duhawks with a final time of 2:06.60. 

Forbort and Ann Quinn finished second and third in the women's 50 yard freestyle, finishing in 27.51 and 27.65, respectively. On the men's side, the Duhawks took the top five places of six, led by LaGrange who finished first with a final time of 23.26 while Holmes came in second in 24.47 and Zach Nelson in third with a 25.04 finish. 

Kerchmar, Kendra Sirianni and Grace VanPetten picked up 16 points for the Duhawks in the 200 yard IM with Kerchmar earning nine with a first place finish in 2:24.27 while Sirianni came in second with a 2:50.03 finish. VanPetten rounded out the race with a 3:02.11 time 
McMillan, Day and Jorgensen did the same in the men's race, with McMillan finishing first in 2:18.02, just before Day who came in at 2:18.85. Jorgensen took third in the event with a 2:19.55 finish. 

In the first of two rounds of dives, Gannon Harrington earned nine points after racking up 135.20 points with his first place finish while Nicholas Schlader finished second with 125.60 points. Martin Harrington took third in the event with a 96.00 finish for the Duhawks. 

In the women's 100 yard butterfly, Strohmeyer garnered a first place finish with her 1:06.95 finish while Brad LaGrange took second in the men's race with a 58.43 time. 

Kinsey Bogen took third in the women's 100 yard freestyle event to bring in three more points for the Duhawks while Jorgensen took first on the men's side with a 53.91 final time, followed up by Broas who finished in 56.26. 

Morgan Haus and Ellie Stine swam in the women's 100 yard backstroke, with Haus taking first with a 1:19.58 time and Stine following closely behind in 1:19.94. In the men's race, Markowski took first with a 1:06.01 time while Day came in second after finishing in 1:07.24. 

In the women's 500 yard freestyle, Schiro and Hrabak took the top two spots, respectively, with Schiro finnishing in 5:54.84 and Hrabak coming in at 6:03.11. On the men's side, Roberto Solis brought in nine points with a first place finish, coming in at 5:39.31 and McMillan coming in second with a 5:43.28 time. 

In the second round of dives, Schlader racked up 173.85 points to take first, adding another nine points to the team's total while G. Harrington came in second with 138.05 points. 

In the women's 100 yard breastroke, Kerchmar notched a third place finish with a 1:19.61 time while Holmes came in first in the men's race with his 1:08.99 time. The meet ended on a high note for both men's and women's 200 yard freestyle relay teams, with Quinn, Forbort, Bogen and Hrabak posting a first place finish with a 1:49.60 time and G. Harrington, M. Harrington, Nicholas Schlader and James McArthur taking first in the men's race with a 1:27.68 time. 

The men's team blew past the Storm with a commanding 163-27 win, while the women earned a 114-92 victory to see the Duhawks sweep the event. 

The Duhawks return to San Jose Pool on Saturday, Nov. 20 as they take on the Grinnell College Pioneers. The meet is slated to begin at 1:00 PM.
