Sydney Schuler were a force to be reckoned with from three-point range on Saturday as the pair led the Loras College women's basketball team (11-4, 5-1 A-R-C) to a 76-60 victory against Nebraska Wesleyan University (2-11, 0-5 A-R-C) and helped the Duhawks stave off a comeback bid by the Prairie Wolves to score their fourth-straight American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) win.
The Prairie Wolves came out strong to start the game as the hosts looked to end a ten-game losing streak, and held the lead for the first five minutes. A pair of free throws by
Madison Fleckenstein put Loras within one point of Nebraska Wesleyan with 3:42 on the clock and a jump shot by
Sami Martin put up the go-ahead points as Loras too the lead, 11-10. The Prairie Wolves came back to take a brief lead until back-to-back three-pointers by Schuler opened up a 17-12 lead to end the first ten minutes.
The Galena, Ill. native remained hot to start the second quarter with another three-pointer and
Emerson Whittenbaugh joined in on the scoring with a fast-break layup off a steal to take a 22-12 lead. The Prairie Wolves chipped away but more strong three-point shooting by Fleckenstein and Haslow helped the Duhawks keep their distance.
Cierra Bachmann grabbed an errant pass by the Prairie Wolves, taking it coast to coast for the layup to give the Duhawks a ten-point lead with 20 seconds left in the half. Nebraska Wesleyan hit a jump shot in the final seconds but Loras took a 31-23 lead at the buzzer.
The Prairie Wolves went on a hot streak to start the second half, outscoring the Duhawks 14-4 in the first six minutes and scoring ten points off turnovers, but the Duhawks found momentum off a fast break layup by Fleckenstein and three-pointers by Haslow and
Silvana Scarsella for a 10-4 run to close out the third quarter. Haslow scored eight points in the final two minutes of the quarter, including a buzzer-beater three-pointer that helped give Loras a 52-41 lead heading into the final ten minutes.
A lone free throw by Haslow in the opening minute was the only scoring either team saw for nearly four minutes until two more three-pointers by Schuler helped Loras to a 59-45 lead at the halfway point of the fourth quarter. The Prairie Wolves had some energy with three minutes to play, coming within nine points, but the sharp-shooting duo of Haslow and Schuler extended the Duhawks' lead, 72-54 with 1:19 left in the game. Bachmann added on a layup to make it a 20-point game and a pair of free throws by
Tess Johnson in the final 15 seconds sealed the win for the Duhawks as they improved to 5-1 on the season in A-R-C play.
Haslow posted a season-high 24 points, just one off her career-best, with 6-10 three-point shooting and grabbed six rebounds and a team-best four steals. Schuler had a career-night with 24 points off 6-13 three-point shooting while Martin added her second-straight double-digit rebounding performance with ten. Fleckenstein dished out four assists.
Loras returns home for more league action on Wednesday, Jan. 19, hosting No. 13-ranked Wartburg College. The last meeting between the two was in the A-R-C quarterfinals when Loras upset the then-ranked No. 4 Knights to advance to the semifinals. Tip-off inside the Patrick J. Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center is set for 5:30 P.M.
