Jan. 8, 2021 - In their first meet of the new year, the Loras College swim and dive teams welcomed the North Central College Cardinals to San Jose Pool for a dual meet Saturday afternoon. The Duhawks cruised to a 146-42 win on the men's side while the women earned a 131-34 victory where they took first in every event on the day.
In the first event of the day,
Taylor Hrabak,
Artie Kerchmar,
Molly Strohmeyer and
Kinsey Bogen earned a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a 2:04.68 time. In the men's race,
Jonathan Broas,
Brian Day,
Brad LaGrange and
Kevin McMillan took a dominating win with a 1:47.12 time, finishing a whole 12 seconds before the Cardinals' relay team.
Austin Jorgensen was the only Duhawk to swim in the 1,000-yard freestyle and earned a win with an 11:44.44 time, finishing over a minute ahead of North Central's Ben Laurich.
The women's 200-yard freestyle saw Hrabak earn the Duhawks nine points with a first place finish in 2:12.28 while
Morgan Haus placed third in 2:23.48. On the men's side,
Noah James and
Christopher Grunke, Jr. took the top two spots with 2:06.39 and 2:07.25 finishes, respectively.
Annie Quinn and
Kendra Sirianni earned first and second place finishes in the women's 50-yard freestyle with Quinn posting a 27.55 time and Sirianni finishing in 28.85. LaGrange cruised to a first place finish in the men's race with a 22.86 time while teammate
Payton Markowski finished second in 25.30.
Strohmeyer excelled for the Duhawks in the women's 200-yard IM with her 2:34.57 time to finish first while Day, McMillan and
Cole Rabedeaux swam in the men's race to combine for 16 team points. Day took first in the event with a 2:17.99 time while McMillan and Rabedeaux took second and third with 2:18.36 and 2:27.31 times, respectively.
Tanner Carter was the meet's lone women's diver, helping earn the Duhawks nine points with a final score of 68.30 through the first five dives of the day. In the men's first dive event of the day, North Central's Nicholas Domschke took first with a final score of 156.65, marking the Cardinals' only event win of the day.
Gannon Harrington finished second for the Duhawks wiht a 117.75 score while
Nicholas Schlader took third with a 104.50 tally and
James McArthur rounded out the Duhawks in fourth with a 65.00 total.
Ellie Stine grabbed another nine team points for the Duhawks in the women's 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 1:10.07 while James took first in the men's race with a 59.73 time.
Three Duhawks in Bogen, Quinn and Kerchmar took the top spots in the women's 100-yard freestyle with Bogen posting a 1:00.21 time, Quinn with a 1:02.80 finish and Kerchmar with a 1:04.78 time. LaGrange dominated in the men's race with a 50.07 time.
In the women's 100-yard backstroke, Strohmeyer took first with a 1:12.70 time while McMillan took first in the men's race with a 1:00.05 finish as the Duhawks swept the event with no Cardinals entered to race. Hrabak continued to rack up first place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 6:06.59. Schlader came back in the second portion of the diving event, taking first with a 171.25 score while Harrington finished third with his 124.10 total.
Kerchmar took first in the women's 100-yard breaststroke with her 1:18.99 time with teammate Bogen following closely behind in third with a 1:20.84 finish. Day and Markowski took first and second, respectively, in the men's race as Day led the race with a 1:05.45 time and Markowski posting a 1:11.55 finish.
The meet drew to a close with the 200-yard freestyle relay as the Duhawks earned 11 points on each side as
Grace VanPetten, Haus, Stine and Sirianni finished in 2:03.11 while Jorgensen, Rabedeaux, James and Grunke, Jr. finished in 1:43.81 to catapult the Duhawks to a clean sweep over the Cardinals.
The Duhawks return to San Jose Pool for their Senior Day on Saturday, Jan. 15 against the Norse from Luther College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
