Women’s Basketball Takes Down Elmhurst 83-56 on the Road

ELMHURST, Ill. (Nov. 16, 2022) – A steady and consistent performance from the Loras College women's basketball team resulted in a 27-point victory on Wednesday night as the Duhawks beat Elmhurst University 83-56 on the road.

The Duhawks (2-1) outscored the Bluejays (0-4) in each quarter, but never by more than nine points to slowly build their lead throughout the contest. Loras paced the winless Bluejays in most major categories, including points off turnovers (18-3) and second chance points (20-4) to outduel home side.

A slow start saw the Duhawks trail 17-14 late in the first quarter, but a three-pointer from graduate guard Hannah Thiele knotted the score at 17 all and started what would be a 6-0 run to close out the frame.

The Bluejays didn't go quietly as they took another lead early in the second quarter, but again a short 12-5 run for Loras got the Duhawks back out in front for good as they darted out to a 45-31 halftime lead.

The Duhawks did not trail again en route to a bounce-back victory. A late three-pointer from senior Madison Haslow put Loras ahead by 29 points, the largest margin of the game, before ultimately finishing with a convincing 27-point win.

A pair of guards in senior Madison Fleckenstein and junior Sami Martin paced the Duhawks with 17 points each. The duo did more than just score as Fleckenstein led the team with four steals while Martin led the team with five assists. They also ranked 1-2 on the team in rebounds with seven and eight, respectively.

Senior guard Cierra Bachman joined the top duo in double-figures as she finished with 11. Sophomore Silvana Scarsella led all bench players in the game with nine and again proved to be a valuable sixth-man option for the Duhawks as she knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the game.

Loras begins its American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) slate next Tuesday, Nov. 22 when the Duhawks travel to Indianola, Iowa to take on thew Simpson College Storm. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 P.M.
