Dec. 29, 2022 – Loras College's women's basketball team kept its hot streak going on Thursday afternoon as the Duhawks ran away with a double-digit victory over a ranked opponent, this time in the form of a 73-54-win over No. 23 Calvin University. The win marks four in a row for Loras with three of those coming against ranked opponents.
The Duhawks (9-2) took down the Knights (8-3) in the second game of the Loras Holiday Tournament after the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point defeated Wheaton College in the tournament opener. Calvin will face Wheaton on Friday at 2 P.M. with Loras and UWSP to follow.
Loras nearly dug itself into a big hole early on Thursday afternoon as Calvin led 17-9 late in the first quarter. The Knights got 10 early points from their 6'3 center Gabby Timmer, who gave Loras fits on defense in the opening stage. Timmer would go on to finish with a team-high 17 points after scoring 10 of Calvin's first 12 points.
The Duhawks finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run as back-to-back three-pointers from senior guard
Cierra Bachmann knotted the score at 17-17. That gave the Duhawks the momentum they needed as they outscored the Knights 23-13 in the second quarter to take a 10-point lead into the break.
After halftime, Loras maintained a sizable lead as the margin never slipped lower than six points for the rest of the game. A late 21-point lead proved to be the largest of the game before the Duhawks finished out the 19-point victory.
On their current four-game winning streak, the Duhawks average margin of victory is an impressive 22.75 points.
Junior guard
Sami Martin led the Duhawks with a season-high 25 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Martin finished 12-for-19 from the field to help the team to a 42.9 shooting percentage, just a tick above its average of 42.6 percent.
Bachmann added 15 points with a trio of three-pointers while senior forward
Madison Haslow added 11. Sophomore guard
Silvana Scarsella added nine points and tallied three steals to lead the team as the Duhawks committed just 13 turnovers compared to 21 from the Knights.
The Loras Holiday Tournament concludes tomorrow as the Duhawks face UWSP in the final game at 4 P.M.
