Jan. 25, 2023 – It wasn't all smooth sailing, but the Loras College women's basketball team found a way to pull away from the Simpson College Storm on Wednesday night to complete the regular season sweep.
The Duhawks (15-4, 8-2 A-R-C) and Storm (10-9, 5-5 A-R-C) played one of the lowest scoring games for both teams when they met earlier this season in November. This time around, the offense came more naturally for both sides as the Duhawks pulled away for an 85-60 win inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
A fast-paced game played into the hands of the Duhawks as they ran up and down the floor to sink a season-high 34 field goals in the game. That 34-for-60 performance resulted in a 56.7 percent shooting clip, which also marks a new season-high.
Despite those impressive numbers, the Duhawk lead remained in the single digits in the early stages of the second quarter. An 11-2 run during the first five minutes of the second period opened the Duhawk lead to as many as 12 and set things in motion for a 23-12 scoring advantage in that 10-minute span.
A late layup from sophomore guard
Daniella Jarrell gave the Duhawks an 18-point lead heading into halftime. Simpson hung around in the third quarter and outscored the Duhawks 16-14, but it wasn't enough to mount any kind of comeback.
Loras connected on five of its first six field goal attempts in the fourth quarter to send the margin all the way to 26 points and officially put the game out of reach. Three of those makes came from senior forward
Madison Haslow, helping her to be one of four Duhawks to finish in double figures on the night.
Haslow finished with 12 points, joining senior guards
Cierra Bachmann and
Madison Fleckenstein with that same total. Those four combined to make 14 shots from the field during the game, but they all were left chasing junior guard
Sami Martin's team total of 14 points.
Martin finished the day 7-for-8 from the field while adding five rebounds and two assists. She was one of six players to tally two or more assists in the game as Haslow lead the way with four.
Sophomore forward
Emerson Whittenbaugh came off the bench two hit a pair of three-pointers, tying her with Jarrell with eight points each while sophomore guard
Silvana Scarsella also pitched in seven points off the bench, highlighting the balanced attack for the Duhawks on Wednesday night.
This weekend marks somewhat of a bye week for the Duhawks as they get seven days to prepare for their next game, which is slated for next Wednesday, Feb. 1, on the road at Coe College at 5:30 P.M.
