WAVERLY, Iowa – The No. 19 Loras College women's basketball team dropped its first contest in nearly two months, falling to No. 11 Wartburg College, 59-57, in overtime on Wednesday evening inside Levick Arena.
Despite facing a 20-point deficit with only three minutes to play in the third quarter, the Duhawks (16-3 overall, 8-2 American Rivers Conference) nearly completed one of the biggest comebacks in all of college basketball this season.
Down 46-30 entering the fourth quarter, the Purple and Gold went on an 8-0 run over the first two minutes to force a Wartburg (19-2, 12-0) timeout. A 17-to-4 run over the following seven minutes brought Loras within three (50-47), before senior guard
Madison Fleckenstein nailed an equalizing three-pointer with eight seconds to play to force overtime.
The Duhawks struggled to find much offense in the extra period, scoring only one point over the first four-plus minutes of play. Back-to-back three pointers on Loras' final two possessions brought Loras within two as time expired. For the Knights, its the smallest margin of victory this season.
Sami Martin scored 14 points and hauled in six rebounds, which tied Fleckenstein for the team lead.
Silvana Scarsella finished with 11 points, three steals and an assist in 34 minutes of action.
Madison Haslow and Fleckenstein registered eight points each. Haslow had five rebounds, including two on the offensive glass.
Up next, the Duhawks travel to Pella to take on Central College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
