Loras Falls in Game One of the Big Island Classic

HILO, Hawaii – The Loras College women's basketball team came up short against North Park University, 66-44, in game one of the Big Island Classic in Hilo, Hawaii.

Claire Wagner opened the scoring with a layup just 17 seconds into the game, followed by a jumper two possessions later to give her team an early 4-2 lead. North Park (2-7 Overall, 0-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) regained the lead with a layup by Kathryn Keehn two and a half minutes into the game and never looked back, holding onto their lead the remainder of the contest.

Loras (3-6 Overall, 0-3 American Rivers Conference) kept things close, trailing by seven going into the fourth quarter, but a cold shooting frame caused their comeback attempt to fall short.

Wagner posted her second straight double-double with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 11 rebounds. Ashtyn Kelderman tallied 11 points in 31 minutes of action while Amelia Lavorato was a perfect 2-for-2 from three to finish with six points for Loras. As a team, the Purple and Gold shot 36.4 percent (16-of-44) from the floor, and 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from beyond the arc.

North Park was led by Caroline Long who finished with 19 points and six rebounds. Aliyah Hershberger added 16 points of an efficient 6-of-8 shooting night while Keehn rounded out double-digit scorers with 13 points for the Vikings. NPU shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from three and was 23-of-49 from the floor which is good for 46.9 percent.

Up Next: The Duhawks will return to action tomorrow night against the Hilbert College Hawks for game two of the Big Island Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m central time.
