DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Duhawks plated six runs in the second inning on their way to a dismantling of the Polar Bears, 15-6.
It was a 1-2-3 inning in the first for Ohio Northern (7-2, 0-0 OAC), who was receiving votes in the most recent d3baseball.com poll and possessed a top 30 ranking in division III for team ERA.
But Loras (6-4, 0-0 A-R-C) was out for blood in the second, and they gave the Polar Bears all they could handle.
The inning began with a double by
Vince Polizzi, which was followed by a single from
Ryan Quinlan. This gave
Ben Shea an opportunity to plate a run for the Purple and Gold, and he took advantage. A single to left field brought Polizzi around and opened the floodgates. From there, the Duhawks scored runs on an
Alex Sandoval walk, an
Evan Hermanson single, all culminating in a
Jackson Cullen line-drive long ball to left.
It was the perfect storm for Loras and thankfully
Vincent Costantino was throwing a gem on the other side of the ball to keep the Purple and Gold squarely out in front.
A whole host of Duhawks continued the hit party, with
Colin Kissane and
Liam Sullivan collecting RBI and
Jake Zeal managing a pair of bunt singles.
Ohio Northern had little response, and after Loras nearly run-ruled their foes, the Duhawks managed a fantastic get-back win in nine innings.
On Deck: Loras returns to the diamond on March 12, for a matchup with the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellow Jackets. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. eastern time at Chain of Lakes Complex.
