Women's Soccer Falls in Overtime

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – On a chilly Wednesday night, the Duhawks fell 3-2 in double overtime to crosstown rivals University of Dubuque for their first loss in conference play. The Spartans scored in the 6', 60' and in the 104' for the game-winner. Scoring for the Duhawks was Kat Hermanas (43') and Maura Walsh (83').

The Spartans quickly took the upper hand attacking the Duhawks from the whistle. Liz Frazier put Dubuque on the board in the 6' with a heel flick past Hannah Wilson after some confusion in the box following a corner kick.

Loras struggled to find an offensive presence as has been typical of the season so far. The Duhawks struggled to connect passes through the middle of the field allowing the Spartans to disrupt play frequently.

Junior Kat Hermanas evened the score in the 43' when she connected with the ball at the near post on a diving header off a Madie Avery corner.

In the second half, the Duhawks gained new life as they began to challenge the Spartan defense. Their offensive runs put pressure on the defense but the Spartans held strong. In the 60', Kelsey Graefen put Dubuque back on top with a header off a corner kick.

The Spartans' second goal shifted the momentum in their favor and they continued to test the Duhawks' defense. Wilson broke up a shot attempt in the 77' by Megan Siepler to deny the Spartans a chance at increasing their lead to two. Desperate for a goal, Loras scrambled offensively earning a number of corner kicks. In the 83', Maura Walsh drove home a loose ball in the box after a Madie Avery corner to even the score for the second time of the night.

The remainder of regulation time saw both teams attempt to finish the game but neither team was able to, resulting in the Duhawks' first overtime contest of the season. Dubuque led the charge out of the gate in the overtime, ripping four shots and failing to put any on frame. Senior Kristina Everding gave the Duhawks their best chance, but sent her shot high.

The second overtime was much the same for both teams. Ultimately, it was Lisa Rosas who found the game winner for the Spartans in the 105'. Lauren Waddell served up a free kick from near the half that hit the crossbar and rebounded out to Rosas in the box, resulting in her goal.

Game Changer
A foul called on Loras in the 104' resulted in Rosas' goal after Waddell's free kick rebounded off the crossbar and to the feet of Rosas.

Key Stat
The Spartans won both the corner kick battle (10-5) and the shot count (13-12), but the teams were both locked at four saves each.
