UW-Platteville Upends No. 8 Duhawks

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (Duhawks.com) – The No. 8 Loras College Duhawks were upended Wednesday night on the road, falling to UW-Platteville 1-0 in overtime. Despite holding a dominating advantage in almost every offensive category, the Duhawks were unable to walk away victorious and suffered their second loss of the season.

The Pioneers, who entered Wednesday's contest with a 4-8-3 record, were coming off a disappointing result to Maranatha Baptist. As the storyline traditionally unfolds, the two sides were close in the opening minutes, but as time wore on, the Duhawks grew stronger.

In the 25th minute, senior J.D. Perez provided a leading through ball over the top to freshman Spencer Moore and sprung him on a breakaway. Wanting to leave nothing to chance, UW-Platteville goalkeeper Scott Sibik came charging off his line to meet Moore inside the penalty area. Under pressure, Moore attempted to lift his shot attempt over Sibik and to the far post, but sailed it wide.

Loras tested Sibik three more times in the opening half but failed to break the scoreless leveling, with the Duhawks outshooting the Pioneers 10-4.

Out of the gate in the second half, head coach Dan Rothert changed his personnel just enough to create more offensive chances.

In the 55th minute, an errant goal kick by Sibik fell to the feet of Moore. With junior Richard Lenke on his left, Moore slid the lead pass to Lenke into the penalty area. A big first touch from the Mt. Prospect native allowed Sibik to clean up his mess, preventing a scoring opportunity.

Two minutes later, with the momentum building with every Loras possession, Perez found himself down near the endline looking to get on the end of a lofted pass. In the process, Perez was clipped from behind but no penalty was awarded from the center official.

In the 62nd minute, senior Tom Fluegel found himself at the corner of the 18 with space to move. With a step over, Fluegel charged in and sent his shot on frame, forcing Sibik to tip it over the crossbar.

On the ensuing corner kick, the Duhawks thought they had broken the scoreless draw as sophomore Chris Paulino got on the end of Fluegel's service. Once the header had entered the back of the net, however, the center official called the goal off and whistled for a foul on Loras.

After a big save by sophomore Adam Roloff in the 73rd minute, Moore fought through the backline and found himself with a breakaway opportunity. For the second time, though, Moore could not net the winner as Sibik made a strong foot save to his right, denying Moore.
With time winding down and the Duhawks looking to avoid extra time, junior Jorge Simon flicked on what could've been the game-winner, but instead Stephen Hall was waiting on the goal line to clear away the header attempt in the 83rd minute.

A full 90 minutes could not settle the two sides and extra time was in order. The Pioneers came out strong to open overtime and were rewarded in the 92nd minute when Mdobje Sarr put just enough on his shot to elude the dive of Roloff and life UW-Platteville to victory.

Gamechanger
In the 62nd minute, Loras had a goal waved off due to a foul in the box. While Loras still remained in the hunt, this single action proved to be one of the deciding factors in the game.
