PELLA, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – Junior
Kara Kentner's triple-double (18 kills - 30 assists - 17 digs) paced the Duhawks as they took down Central College 3-2 (25-22, 25-23, 13-25, 24-26, 18-16) on Tuesday night. The win snaps a four-game conference losing streak for the Duhawks, giving them their first Iowa Conference win of the season.
Loras led from the start to finish in the opening set, out-hitting the Dutch .200 to .167, on their way to a 25-22 win. The momentum built by the Duhawks in the first set was matched by Central in the early parts of the second set.
The two teams played through six ties before the Dutch took a 20-16 lead on a 3-0 run. Sophomore
Therese Schultz put a stop to the Central run with a crosscourt kill. A few points later, a kill by sophomore
Danni Kennedy pulled the Duhawks within one, 23-22, before Kentner rattled off three straight kills to give Loras the set win, 25-23.
Leading the match 2-0 heading into the third set, the Duhawks seemed to be on track to win their first Iowa Conference match of the season. Unfortunately, the Dutch had different plans handing the Duhawks a third set loss, 25-13, and cut Loras' lead in the match to 2-1.
In the fourth set, much like the second, the teams traded points through eight ties. A kill by Kentner put Loras ahead, 14-13, a lead the Duhawks were unable to hold onto. Central closed the set on a 9-3 run to level the match at two.
In the fifth set, Loras found themselves behind the 8-ball trailing the Dutch 14-10. The Duhawks showed resilience fighting back to knot it at 14 behind a kill by sophomore
Miriam McKee and a trio of Dutch errors. Another kill by Schultz, paired with a few Central miscues put the Duhawks in position to win at 17-16.
This time, with Central standing with their backs to the wall, Erickson dug out the attack from Hannah Welter and passed it to Kentner who set up Kennedy for the match-winning kill.
Loras improves to 11-13 overall and 1-4 in the Iowa Conference with the win.
