Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Everding the Hero in Upset of No. 12 Concordia-Moorhead

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – Just two days after handing Luther College their second loss of the year, the Loras Women's Soccer team returned home for the first time in 16 days to host Concordia-Moorhead in a non-conference match. A strong and physically battle played out, but senior Kristina Everding lifted the Duhawks to victory, scoring in the 82nd minute for her first goal of the year.

The sides began with plenty of equal possession in the middle third, trading runs into their respective attacking thirds. Neither side was able to gain much of a foothold, but the first opportunity came in the 23rd minute.

After playing as the attacking mid against Luther, junior Katie Truesdale moved back up top to forward with Loras playing in a 4-3-3. This adjustment in the linup freed Truesdale to make more direct runs a the backline, which almost paid off for Loras.

With possession in the near corner of the 18, Truesdale dribbled around her mark and drew the foul in the box, garnering the penalty kick from the center official. However, a slight mishit from Truesdale gave Elizabeth Bitzan all the advantage she needed to get a hand on the ball and direct it wide of goal.

The remaining 25 minutes consisted of equal play back and forth with Loras finishing the half with nine shots to the Cobbers' six. Loras challenged Bitzan two additional times, but the goalkeeper stood tall and kept her side level at zero.

In the second half, the Cobbers were the stronger team out of the break, testing Hannah Wilson four times in the first 20 minutes. The senior stood tall, keeping her clean sheet in tact.

With regulation time beginning to dwindle, the field began to open up, resulting in more scoring chances. In the 81st minute, Truesdale ripped a shot on frame, forcing Bitzan to dive to her right to make the save, giving Loras a corner kick.

On Loras' fourth and final corner kick of the game, freshman Riley O'Neill sent her service into the penalty area and connected with Truesdale who chested it down and left it for Everding to slot home. The Sumner, Iowa native didn't miss, giving the Duhawks the 1-nil lead with only minutes remaining on the clock.

A valiant effort from Concordia-Moorhead was unsuccessful, as Loras upset the 12th-ranked Cobbers, 1-nil.

The win gives Loras their 10th victory of the season and fourth shutout victory in a row.

Gamechanger
Rather than attempt to swing off balance at the bouncing ball, Truesdale left it for Everding who had a better angle at sending home the winner.

Key Stat
Everding's winner was her first career game-winning goal

Quotable
Loras Head Coach Dan Rothert

"I think our defensive effort these last few games has been really good. When you get a shutout, you're going to have a chance to win. It was a slow start for us today, but with the schedule we've played, it's helped us defensively. This game could be a signature win for us towards that at-large bid."
