DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – The Duhawks bounced back from a season opening loss with a convincing 99-71 win over the Edgewood Eagles on Sunday afternoon. A strong offensive performance by junior
Kaitlin Phillips was paired with a dominating defensive game by sophomore
Lori Obendorf, allowing the Duhawks to take control early before cruising to the 28 point victory.
Loras scored the opening bucket, a mid-range jump shot by Phillips, to take an early 2-0 lead. The Duhawks never trailed from that point on, carrying a 19 point lead into the locker room at halftime behind 17 points from Phillips and 10 from senior
Carly Goede.
In the second half, a three-pointer by sophomore
Callie Johnson pushed the Duhawks lead to 35 with 9:23 to play. A 6-0 run by the Eagles cut the Duhawks lead to 29 before sophomore
Erin Weaver was fouled. Weaver hit the front end of one and one before hitting the second, making the score 85-54.
Johnson corralled a defensive board moments later and pushed it up the floor to freshman
Miranda Chapman. Breaking up court, Chapman used a crossover to break past the defender before taking it to the rim for the layup.
Just over a minute later, freshman
Kate Moriarty forced the Eagles into a turnover, coming away with the steal. Moriarty eluded a pair of Edgewood players and drove to the hoop, making the layup and earning a free throw. She converted from the line capping the three-point play.
Moments later, Johnson made her way to the line. Sinking a pair of free throws, Johnson pushed the Duhawks lead to 36 points, 94-58, their largest of the game.
Edgewood chipped away at the lead over the remaining six minutes but the Duhawks held them off, earning the victory, 99-71.
