COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (Duhawks.com) – The early setbacks continued for the Loras Men's Soccer team on Sunday, as they surrendered a goal in the 15'. It would take some time, but the Duhawks answered in a big way, scoring two goals in two minutes to defeat Saint Johns, 2-1.
Sophomore
Adam Roloff made his first start in goal on Sunday and was tested early by the Johnnies. A long throw in the 15' was headed to the top right corner of the net, catching Roloff out of position and giving the Johnnies the early lead. For the second time in as many days, Loras found themselves behind early and were forced to respond.
Despite a barrage of offensive chances in the first half, Loras was unable to solve Saint Johns' goalkeeper Kevin Lebahn. The backstop finished with eight saves on the day.
A change in formation from Loras Head Coach
Dan Rothert brought about a new look for the Johnnies to defend. The change paid its dividends almost immediately as freshman
Spencer Moore netted the equalizer in the 48' on an assist from junior
Matt Brant.
Fourteen seconds later, sophomore
Alex Bradley pushed to Duhawks into the lead for good, swarming after the restart and regaining possession before slotting his shot from distance past Lebahn.
The quick change in momentum left Saint Johns dazed and struggling to recover. The Johnnies finished with an even number of shots as Loras, 17, but only managed to put three on frame.
Midway through the second half, Loras earned a throw-in deep in the Saint Johnnies' zone. Sophomore
Kyler Olson took the throw-in and sent it to junior
Bryan Irwin, who returned the ball to Olson. Moore, noticing a lapse in the Johnnies coverage made a run to the near post and just got enough of the ball from Moore to direct it through the legs of a Johnnies defender and Lebahn.
As the Loras bench erupted in jubilation, a conference by the center official with his assistant overturned the goal, declaring that the ball had not been touched by anyone after the throw-in.
With the clock ticking down, the Duhawks stood tall in the back and prevented an equalizer from the Johnnies, holding on for the 2-1 win.
Loras improves to 6-1-0 on the year and will host the University of Chicago on Thursday in the Rock Bowl. The Maroons fell to Olivet on Saturday, 2-1, bringing their season record to 4-2-0.
