No. 22 Loras Doubles Up Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wisconsin (Duhawks.com) – The Duhawks made the trip to Waukesha, Wisconsin on Tuesday, September 2 to take on Carroll University. The No. 22 Duhawks defeated Carroll 2-0 with freshman Maura Walsh netting the game winner in the 49'. Junior Abby Maier added the insurance goal for Loras just a minute later in the 50'. Loras outshot Carroll 16-5 and senior goalkeeper Hannah Wilson stopped the five shots she faced.

As the sun burned on their backs, the Duhawks kicked off their third game of the season. The team felt the heat early getting a bit of a slow start. Loras set the pace after the first ten minutes pressuring Carroll goalkeeper, Erica Patterson. Patterson seemed unfazed by the pressure and would not allow the Duhawks on the scoreboard despite facing 11 shots in the first 45 minutes.
Freshman Lauren Bolnius continued to build on her promising start to the 2014 season and her collegiate career. She had a breakaway in the 24' that was denied by Patterson but kept working with her teammates in hopes of finding the back of the net. Bolnius led the Duhawks with four shots going into the half.

The Duhawks didn't waste any time making up for the blank slate in the first 45 minutes. The forwards relentlessly pressured Patterson and the Carroll defense and were finally able to break the scoreless draw in the 49'. Walsh netted her first collegiate goal as the product of a great effort from the Duhawk offense. Juniors Ailish Rispin and Katie Truesdale connected just outside the box and Truesdale was able to play the ball through to Walsh who had joined the attack on the left. Walsh beat her defender and lifted the ball over Patterson safely into the back of the net to put the Duhawks up 1-0.

"It felt really good to score my first goal," Walsh said. "As my celebration showed, I was really excited. Truesdale set me up with a great pass."

Loras' thirst was unquenched with just one goal and went right back to work in search of another. One minute after Walsh's goal, the Duhawks earned a corner with sophomore Madie Avery taking the set piece. Avery slotted her offering just past the near post where Maier was waiting in front of Patterson. Maier slid the ball under a diving Patterson inside the near post to double the Duhawk lead.

"It feels good to be back," Maier said. "I wasn't here last year, so getting a goal and getting back with the team kind of got the nerves out of me."

Carroll increased the pressure on the Duhawks in hopes of finding the scoreboard. Hannah Wilson faced four shots from the Pioneers in the second half but kept her clean sheet in tact thanks to her aggressive presence in the box. She thwarted Carroll's final scoring opportunity when forward Mattie Zettel broke through the defense in the 83' by sliding out to secure the ball inside the top corner of the box.

The Duhawks get a break until Friday when they will take on Augsburg College on Friday at 5 p.m. in the Rock Bowl. The Auggies are undefeated in 2014 with three wins including a 10-0 win over University of Northwestern-St. Paul at home. The last time the Duhawks and the Auggies met was back in 2012 in Minneapolis. Loras held the upper hand in that contest, winning 3-2 in double overtime.

"Augsburg has been a really tough opponent in the past but after today's performance, I feel really confident in the team," Maier said. "We were clicking together and making passes that we haven't made in past games. Everything looked good today."

Kick off is set for 5:00 p.m. with live coverage on the Duhawk Broadcast Network.
