DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - After dropping their conference opener on Wednesday, Loras will look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Cedar Rapids and take on Coe.
ABOUT COE ...The Kohawks have hopes of moving their win streak to three, when they welcome the Duhawks to town on Saturday. Coe is coming off of a convincing Iowa Conference win over Simpson (66-44) on Wednesday.
Despite the loss of All-Conference guard Andrew Wirth from a season ago, Coe has relied on senior JT Vonderhaar and junior Jacob Timm. Vonderhaar takes care of business in the trenches, leading the team in points per game (13.9) and is tied for second with 4.8 rebounds per game. Timm's charged with the task of facilitating the offense, a role he has excelled in throughout the season. He leads the team with 70 assists while committing just 15 turnovers.
Defensive adjustments will be vital for the Duhawks to have success on Saturday.
DUHAWKS STUMBLE IN CONFERENCE OPENER ...After riding a two-game winning streak, the men fell in their conference opener to Buena Vista. The Duhawks were hampered by a poor night from beyond the arc, shooting 7-of-24. Senior
Aaron Schueller went 3-of-7 to lead Loras. His solid night from deep vaulted him to second in the conference for three-point shots made per game. Loras has now won just a single conference opener (Simpson, '13-'14) in their last five seasons, dating back to 2010.
GRCIC CONTINUES TO CRASH THE BOARDS ...Junior
Mirko Grcic is not just the third leading scorer in the conference with 16.5 points per game, he also leads the league in rebounding with 11.2 per game, nearly a full rebound more than the runner-up. This week's matchup with Coe should be especially intriguing due to the fact that the Kohawks allow just 30.1 rebounds per game, the best in the conference. For the Duhawks to win, Grcic must grab double digit rebounds, something Coe has allowed just once all season.
DEEP SHOOTING THREATS BATTLE HEAD-TO-HEAD ...Our first key matchup comes at the guard position between Duhawk senior
Aaron Schueller and Kohawk senior Max Schmarzo. Each of these dynamic guard are averaging three baskets from beyond the arc this season, good for first and second in the league respectively. While Schueller has the edge in points per game at 15.1, Schmarzo is shooting a significantly better percentage from deep at 49.3.
VONDERHAAR TASKED WITH SLOWING GRCIC ...At forward, junior
Mirko Grcic squares off against Kohawk senior JT Vonderhaar. Grcic and Vonderhaar each check in at the power forward position and lead their teams in points per game. Grcic undoubtedly has the edge in this matchup as he also bests Vonderhaar in rebounds per game, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, and blocked shots per game. Grcic cannot take Vonderhaar lightly however as he's a seasoned veteran that has started every game for Coe over the course of the last three seasons.
GRCIC TIES SCHOOL RECORD ...In the 2014-15 season opener, junior
Mirko Grcic hauled in 26 rebounds, tying a Loras school record dating back to the 1954-55 season. That year, Al Carew collected 26 rebounds in a game against St. Norbert College.
