Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Goede Calms the Storm

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Following a heartbreaking 72-65 loss to Coe College just four days earlier, the Duhawk Women's Basketball team knew that they'd have to make open shots early and often in order to defeat Simpson College. Using a barrage of 3-point baskets from senior Carly Goede, the Duhawks were able to do just that, defeating the Storm by a final score of 65-53. Goede paced the Loras offense with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, going 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Right out of the gate, the Duhawks (8-6) trailed as the result of back-to-back turnovers. Each turnover produced points for Simpson, giving the Storm a 4-0 lead. The Storm (11-3) would then use a 3-pointer from Britney Boland to extend their lead to 10-2 within the first few minutes of the game. Loras was unable to get things going early in the first half due to multiple turnovers by way of traveling calls, which slowed down Loras' up-tempo pace. It wouldn't be until 9:26 remained in the half that Loras would grab their first lead of the game via a 3-point basket from freshman Megan Jones.

Loras wouldn't hold that lead for long though as Boland once again drained a shot from beyond the arc to vault Simpson ahead. Eventually, each offense found their head of steam until subsequent 3-point baskets from Goede and sophomore Naomi Phillips killed Simpson's momentum. As the clock struck zero, the Duhawks held a 31-26 lead over the favored Storm.

Simpson once again responded, using a 7-2 run to bring the sides level at 33. Loras refused to concede the lead, responding with an 11-0 run of their own. Sophomore Terese McMahon and Goede scored all 11 points for the Duhawks over the course of the run, resulting in the Duhawks' largest lead of the game at 15.

Following the offensive outburst from Loras, the game experienced a significant scoring drought as just nine total points would be scored over the course of the next six minutes of play. With just over two minutes remaining, Loras went on one final surge using McMahons second and-1 conversion of the night to pull ahead by eight with 3:10 to play. Goede sealed the victory for Loras with 1:55 to play, hitting from downtown to give her team a 59-50 advantage.

Despite shooting 10-of-23 from the free-throw line, the Duhawks used their range shooting to pick up the victory, converting 9-of-21 from distance.

With the win, Loras is now tied atop the Iowa Conference standings with a 2-1 conference record.

Quotables
Justin Heinzen, head coach
"After Saturday's game at Coe, I told Carly we need her to be more aggressive. She can be dangerous when she takes 10 shots, and that's what we need from her."
"Our game plan coming in was to get the ball inside early and we executed that. We were able to get the ball to Terese deep in the post and she capitalized."

Terese McMahon, sophomore forward
"Coach Majerowicz has really been working with me on my post moves, it has really helped me improve and gave me the confidence I need to play at a high-level."
