Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Duhawks Top Spartans in Season Finale

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team endured the cold, wind, and rain on Tuesday night to defeat their crosstown rivals, University of Dubuque, 4-2. Junior Madie Avery finished with two goals on the night, but it was senior Katie Truesdale who registered her first game-winner of the 2015 season.

TURNING POINT
After going down a goal in the eighth minute, Loras bounced back with goals in the 22nd and the 25th minutes off the foot of junior Madie Avery to take the early lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Dubuque took advantage of the poor field conditions and challenged freshman Michelle Loyo with a cross from outside the box. Loyo couldn't quite manage to hold on to the ball and Lisa Rosas pounced on the loose ball to put the Spartans ahead.

The next 13 minutes consisted mainly of Loras playing the ball forward in an attempt to get behind the Dubuque backline. An adjustment to the formation saw senior Danielle Vujovic drop into an attacking midfield role, which allowed her to use her aerial ability to be more effective.

In the 22nd minute, freshman Elizabeth Mills delivered a ball on target but was denied by Megan Moll on the initial attempt. Moll parried the shot away from goal, but it dropped to the feet of Avery who delivered home the winner.

Minutes later, with Loras flying with momentum, Avery delivered her free kick past the outstretched arms of Moll and into the back of the net.

Loras struck for two more goals within six minutes of each other, with Truesdale finding her way on the end of a Vujovic free kick in the 59th minute. Later, in the 65th minute, Vujovic sealed the scoring for Loras with her 10th goal of the season on a bending shot from outside of the penalty area.

Dubuque added a goal in the 69th minute, but were unable to muster any further offense.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Madie Avery |
With two goals on the night and her ability to win 50-50 balls in the middle, Madie Avery played a big role in Loras' win over Dubuque.

Loras and Dubuque will meet on Saturday in the opening round of the 2015 Iowa Conference Tournament. With Tuesday's win, the Duhawks earned the No. 3 seed in the conference while Dubuque enters the tournament as the No. 6 seed. Kickoff time is to be determined.
