Women's Soccer Edged in Penalties

WAVERLY, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team fought valiantly for 110 minutes on a brisk Saturday night under the lights, but could not muster enough offense to find a goal, drawing level at 0-0 with Wartburg. Freshman Michelle Loyo finished with

HOW IT HAPPENED
In much different fashion than their regular season match, Loras held the Wartburg offense in check all night long. At times, the Knights used their speed to counter, but confident, overlapping defense from Loras' fullbacks squandered each and every opportunity.

The Duhawks were outshot 26-20 overall and 14-7 for shots on target, but thanks to Loyo, Wartburg was kept off the scoresheet. Down the stretch, Loras had their opportunities to claim victory, but often times delivered their shot wide of goal.

In extra time, the Duhawks appeared to be feeling the effects of the cold and long stints of playing time, mustering just two shots compared to Wartburg's seven.

At the end of 110 minutes, the match was turned over to penalties to determine a tournament championship winner. Loras missed on three of their four penalty kicks while the Knights converted on three of their four chances to claim the IIAC Tournament Title, 3-1.

The win gives Wartburg a ticket to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Michelle Loyo |
In her first career tournament championship, Loyo finished with 13 saves, denying the Wartburg attack time and time again. Her 13 saves is a season-best, topping her 10-save performance against Luther earlier in the season.

UP NEXT
Loras will wait to hear their name called during Monday's NCAA Selection Show to learn if they were given an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships. The Duhawks are looking for a return to NCAA Tournament after being missing out in 2014.
