Duhawks Glisten in the Sunshine State

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Duhawks.com) - Smothering defense was the tale of the tape for the Loras women's basketball team on Sunday against Webster in the Cruzin' Classic. Junior Terese McMahon led the offensive charge with 12 points, while junior Lori Obendorf claimed ownership to her fifth double-double of the season.

TURNING POINT
After a fairly close first quarter, Loras (5-4) turned on the after-burners for a 21-6 run in the second quarter and took a commanding leading heading into halftime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

Right out of the gates, Webster (3-5) struck for five points in the first two minutes, while Loras struggled with the turnover bug. Junior Kat Cabrera scored the first points of the game with a jumper from inside the paint. Less than a minute later, senior Kaitlin Phillips put the Duhawks in front with a jumper to take the 7-5 lead.

Key baskets down the stretch helped Loras close out the first frame with a 17-11 lead.

Second Quarter
The Duhawks executed their game plan to perfection, limiting Webster to just six points on two 3-pointers. In total, the Gorloks went 2-for-12 and committed six turnovers which Loras turned into 11 points. From the floor, the Duhawks were 8-of-14 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from distance.

At the end of the half, Loras was in complete control, 38-17.

Third Quarter
The shooting woes continued for Webster in the second half thanks to the Duhawks' tight defense. Loras limited the Gorloks to just 2-of-15 shooting from the floor, while chipping in six baskets of their own. Senior Abby Reinke was strong in the post, finishing with six points and added three rebounds of her own, as well as a block and an assist.

Fourth Quarter
Entering the fourth quarter, Loras found themselves in complete control ahead 51-25 and turned to their bench to help close out the game. Webster's offense came alive with their starters still in, rattling off 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting. The Duhawks struggled to hold onto the ball, committing 10 turnovers, which led to 16 points for Webster. No matter, Loras held on for the 62-48 win.
