Schwalbe's Late Tally Lifts Duhawks to Victory

HANOVER, Ind. (Duhawks.com) - A goal by sophomore Anna Schwalbe with 16 seconds to play completed the Duhawks' come from behind win over the Panthers of Hanover on Thursday. Loras scored the last three goals of the game on their way to the 9-8 win, one day after defeating Wilmington 8-7, posting back-to-back wins for the first time in program history.

Loras (4-6, 1-2) called a timeout after Hanover (1-8, 0-4) netted the first goal of the game with 25:32 to play.

Out of the break, the Duhawks won the draw looking to level the score. As the teams struggled to maintain possession in the midfield, Hanover eventually collected the ball but was called for delay of game and shown the green card, setting up freshman Sarah Hanson. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Hanson drove a lane to the net and buried the goal, evening the score.

Hanover regained the lead three minutes later, moving the ball coast-to-coast before slipping a shot past freshman goalkeeper Ashley McGee.

The Duhawks wasted little time evening the score as sophomore Hannah Nelson won the ensuing draw and charged into the attacking third. Loras turned the ball over temporarily but Hanson caused the turnover and tracked down the ground ball, keeping it with the Duhawks.

Working the ball around, sophomore Anna Schwalbe found an open path to the net and took it, sending a shot just wide of the post. Junior Gina Dacy hustled after the rebound, giving the Duhawks another opportunity. Seconds later, Dacy connected with sophomore Hailey Frederick cutting through the eight. Frederick collected the pass from Dacy and blasted a shot into the back of the net, tying the score at two with 19:57 to play before halftime.

After the teams traded empty possessions over the next 12 minutes, junior Kaitlyn Kutsch scored two goals five minutes apart, putting Loras in front 4-2.

Sophomore Hannah Nelson capped the Duhawks 4-0 run, scoring with 12 seconds before the break. Nelson's goal lifted the Duhawks to a 5-2 lead through one half of play.

Hanover turned the tables on the Duhawks in the second half, rattling off three straight goals to open the second half.

Thirty three seconds after Hanover tied the score at five, Hanson tallied her second goal of the evening. Driving to the net, Hanson sent a shot past the Panthers' goalkeeper, lifting the Duhawks to a 6-5 lead.

Unfortunately for the Duhawks, Hanson's goal was sandwiched between three more from the Panthers, giving them an 8-6 lead with 12:56 to play.

Hanover said a shot off the stick of Hanson but Nelson battled for the rebound before firing a shot into the back of the net, pulling the Duhawks within one with 10:04 to play.

As the Duhawks defense stood tall, keeping the Panthers off the scoreboard, Kutsch found Hanson cutting across the eight. Noticing the space Hanson had created between her and her defender, Kutsch sent a pass right into Hanson's stick. Without hesitation, Hanson found an opening and slipped a shot past the reaching goalkeeper, evening the score at eight with 5:45 left on the clock.

With time winding down and the score still tied at eight, freshman Haley Sundquist saw Schwalbe cutting in from the eight. Putting the pass on the money, Schwalbe made a quick move before burying the game-winning goal with 15 seconds to play, lifting the Duhawks to a 9-8 win.

Quotable

Sarah Hanson, freshman attack
"Our whole goal today was to open up lanes for drives and the attack did a great job as a whole clearing lanes that I was able to take advantage of."

Anna Schwalbe, sophomore attack
"Kaitlyn possessed the ball after the draw and passed it to Haley through the midfield. I saw Haley coming down and decided to cut out wide and then back into the eight meter to look for a pass. She saw me cutting and made a perfect pass right into my stick. I took the shot right away and fortunately, it went in."
