Quick Strike Duhawks Top Blazers

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras Women's Soccer team added to their season win total on Saturday, recording a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten, College of Saint Benedict, 2-1. Loras scored twice in the opening 10 minutes and used their stingy defense to keep the Blazers at bay throughout the final 80 minutes.

Loras opened the scoring in the third minute after senior Danielle Vujovic flicked on the throw-in attempt and watched in escape past the reach of Blazer goalkeeper Heather Kaluzniak. For Vujovic, it was her sixth goal of the year and fifth in her last three games.

Saint Benedict, who had only allowed one goal in their first three games, struggled to find their pace early on, to which the Duhawks used to their advantage. Sophomore Gretchen Schutz doubled Loras' lead in the ninth minute, heading in a cross by senior Katie Truesdale.

The Blazers outshot Loras in the first half, putting four of their eight shots on frame, but junior Maria Siebels was up to the task, keeping the clean sheet intact.

Struggling to find the equalizer, Saint Benedict attempted to create scoring chances from all angles and were eventually rewarded in the 72nd minute when a hard cross attempt from the end line was redirected into the net off a Loras defender to bring the score to 2-1.

The Duhawks played lockdown defense the rest of the way, securing the win and avenging last season's loss.
