Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Duhawks Silenced by No. 7 UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team (12-4-3) saw its season come to an end on Sunday evening in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament, falling to No. 7 UW-Whitewater (22-1-0), 3-0. In her final collegiate match, senior Maria Siebels kept the Duhawks in contention, recording seven saves.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
  • Using the momentum from Saturday's win over St. Thomas, Loras came out in good form, resulting in a header from senior Hanna Burgmeier off a corner from junior Gretchen Schutz. Burgmeier's header was saved off the line by a UWW defender and cleared away.
  • The Warhawks slowly began to turn the momentum in their favor and in the 11th minute, Marie Lesperance blasted a shot from inside the six only to be denied by Siebels.
  • On the ensuing corner, UWW's Kaci Schonert bent in her delivery to the back post, putting her side in front early.
  • Minutes later, the Warhawks jumped at the chance to double their lead as Marie Lesperance slid her shot under a diving Siebels to make it 2-nil UWW.
  • In the 32nd minute, on a Whitewater corner, Emily Mouille found Brianna Reid in the box but Reid's header was saved by Siebels.
  • Looking to cut into the deficit, Loras moved junior Sydney Wright forward into the attack and it nearly paid off in the 38th minute as Wright dribbled forward and after beating her mark directed a shot on target that was saved by Sara Klimisch.

Second Half
  • Junior Gretchen Schutz delivered a throw-in to open the second half that found its way to sophomore Elizabeth Mills in the box, but her shot was denied by Klimisch.
  • In the 51st minute, Reid broke free from her mark and was inside the penalty area before delivering a shot on the doorstep that Siebels rejected.
  • Minutes later, UWW played a ball over the top from the outside back to Reid who after beating her mark to the end line, slid her pass to the feet of Schonert who slotted home the winner to the far post.
  • Trailing 3-nil, the Duhawks continued to push for a goal and nearly had their efforts rewarded in the 63rd minute when Mills' shot rang off the post.
  • With time winding down, Mills dribbled through the midfield and found an opening to shoot, but a diving save from Klimisch to the far post pushed Mills' bid wide of goal and out for a corner.
  • On the second of two consecutive corners, shots from junior Maura Walsh and senior Hanna Burgmeier were blocked before reaching goal.
