DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team was upended as the No. 1 seed on Wednesday night, drawing 1-1 with fourth-seeded Wartburg, and falling in penalties. The Knights advance to Saturday's Iowa Conference Tournament Championship where they will face Luther.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
- The Duhawk's dictated the pace from the opening whistle, targeting five shots on target in the opening 15 minutes compared to the Knights' one.Â
- In the eighth minute, Junior Gretchen Schutz's free kick was saved by a Knight defender on the back post.Â
- Minutes later, a corner kick from Schutz found the head of senior Madie Avery, whose shot had to be deflected by Wartburg's Beth Crow over the crossbar.Â
- The Knights found themselves in the attacking third and setup Morgan Neuendorf for a one-times shot that went wide.
- Schutz was active in the attack again when she crossed a ball right on the penalty spot that junior Maura Walsh headed right at Beth Crow.Â
- In the 38th minute, Alyssa Hewitt created space and fired a shot 25 yards out that senior Maria Siebels handled off a bounce.Â
Second Half
- A Loras free kick from 40 yards out was taken by Schutz who sent a rope of a shot on net that went inches high of the cross bar.Â
- Wartburg earned a free kick in the 61st minute on the end line that ended up bouncing around in the box with Alyssa Drewelow slotting home the go-ahead goal inside the far post.Â
- Loras found the equalizer 13 minutes later when a Schutz corner connected with senior Hanna Burgmeier who headed her shot to the post where junior Lauren Bolnius was waiting to punch it in.Â
- Loras earned another corner in the 80th minute that ended with a scramble on the goal line with the Duhawks unable to jam it into the back of the net.Â
First Overtime
- Alyssa Drewelow picked up a bouncing ball in the 93rd minute and she one-timed a shot that went just high of hitting the cross bar.Â
- Sophomore Elizabeth Mills took on two defenders near the end line and crossed a beautiful ball to the back post that Bolnius could not direct on target.
Second Overtime
- Mills ran onto a bouncing through ball and could not capitalize on the one-on-one scoring chance as Crow got enough of a deflection to prevent any further threat.
- Wartburg was pressuring deep into Loras territory in the 105th minute, ending with a shot by Riley Miller that was saved near post by Siebels.Â
Penalties
- Wartburg connected on three of its four penalty kicks, advancing to Saturday's IIAC Tournament Championship.Â
FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Lauren Bolnius I The Roselle, Ill. native notched the lone goal for Loras helping push the match to extra time. Bolnius caused many problems for the Wartburg back line all night long with her speed and pressure.Â
