DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Wrestling in his last collegiate dual inside the Athletic & Wellness Center, senior Malcolm Watson made the most of his time on the mat, earning five points for Loras with a tech fall at 197#, 21-2. The Duhawks won the last six bouts against Buena Vista to improve to 2-12 overall and 2-4 in the Iowa Conference.
LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
- A late scratch at 125# saw sophomore Jake Lamantia step into the starter's role over fellow sophomore Dayton Olson. Lamantia started off on a good foot, but after being unable to secure a takedown, fell behind to Buena Vista's Ernesto Garcia, eventually falling 11-5.
- Sophomore Michael Triplett got the Duhawks on the board at 133#, using a five-point swing in the second period by way of an escape, a takedown and a four-point near fall. Buena Vista's Carson Rhoads cut into Triplett's 9-0 lead with an escape and takedown in the third, but that would be it for the scoring.
- At 141, junior Evan Weaver managed two escapes and a reversal on Buena Vista's Nashid Barrow. In the third period, Barrow scored a reversal and eventually turned Weaver to his back to secure the pin.
- The Beavers' last win of the dual came at 149#. After senior Colin Griffin scored two takedowns in the first period, Buena Vista's Brad Kerkhoff rattled off five unanswered takedowns to with the bout by major decision, 14-6.
- Sophomore Jimmy Davis only needed one takedown at 157# to win 9-3. Davis scored a two-point near fall in the second period and two two-point near falls in the third period, coupled with a reversal, to win and bring the dual to a 13-6 mark, in favor of Buena Vista.
- At 165#, freshman Sam Schuler was in a heated battle with Marquis Dominique, with both wrestlers scoring at a high rate, ending the first period at 7-6 in favor of Schuler. Dominique scored a takedown to send both wrestlers to the third period tied at 8-all. In the final frame, Schuler scored a crucial takedown and rode out Dominique to win 11-8 and bring Loras to within three points at 13-9.
- Freshman Chris Malone scored all the points he needed in the first period thanks to a takedown and a four-point near fall. An escape from Buena Vista's Kevin Pape concluded the scoring as the remainder of the bout saw no scoring from either side.
- Sophomore Awais Arain won by forfeit at 184#, which gave Loras their first lead of the day at 18-13.
- Senior Malcolm Watson turned on the after burners as the bout wore to a close. Taking a 2-0 lead to the second period, Watson fired off two takedowns and added a four-point near fall before the end of the frame to take a commanding 11-1 advantage to the final frame. It was here that Watson earned a quick escape and went right to work, scoring two takedowns and another four-point near fall, securing the technical fall, 21-2.
- In the final bout of the night at 285#, freshman Quin Gilliam was like a jungle cat in the tall grass, waiting out his prey. Trailing 1-0 heading to the third, Gilliam chose down and turned a reversal on Buena Vista's Gable Bonner and rode him out to earned the riding time point to win 3-2.

Malcolm Watson | In his final home dual, Watson left nothing to chance, winning by technical fall and earning Loras five team points, defeating Austin Hayes, 21-2.

The Duhawks head to Waverly on Friday night to face top-ranked Wartburg. The Knights enter Friday's dual with a blemish-free 18-0 dual record and have all 10 wrestlers ranked in the top-10.
