Late Rally Not Enough for Duhawks in Loss to Spartans

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - On a night that witnessed four pins, including three in-a-row, the Loras wrestling team dropped an Iowa Conference tilt to their crosstown rivals, University of Dubuque, 24-18. Sophomore Dayton Olson and freshman Sam Schuler each won by fall for the Duhawks.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Olson opened the night with an exclamation point, pinning Dubuque's Marcus Ingalls in the first period. Afer Ingalls scored a takedown and a two-point near fall, Olson pulled a reversal and put Ingalls to his back to secure the pin.
  • Loras dropped the next four bouts, including back-to-back pins at 149 and 157, giving Dubuque a 18-6 lead.
  • Schuler fell behind 3-1 in the third period before fighting through and scoring a reversal on Dubuque's Alek Aragon. Schuler built off the momentum and proceeded to earn the win by fall at the 5:11 mark.
  • At 184#, sophomore Awais Arain and Dubuque's Jonathan Denikas went back and forth throughout regulation, but back-to-back reversals in the third period combined with an escape by Arain sent the bout to overtime. In the second tiebreaker, Denikas earned two points on a reversal to secure the 6-4 win.
  • Senior Malcolm Watson earned a win by decision at 197#, totaling three takedowns over Dubuque's Cosmo Halwix. Watson also benefited fom two stalling calls on Halwix, earning two points in the process to win 10-4.
  • In the final bout of the evening, freshman Quin Gilliam won in front of the home fans in convincing fashion, 3-0, over Dubuque's Sawyer McAffrey. Gilliam went right to work in the first period with a takedown and ran up the riding time clock over the remainder of the bout.

Loras will compete at the Jim Fox Open on Saturday, hosted by the University of Dubuque. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. from inside the Stoltz Sports Center.
