Duhawks Break Records in Win Over Cornell

MT. VERNON, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's lacrosse team set a pair of program records on Monday night for most goals scored in a game, goals scored in a half and draw controls, defeating Cornell on the road, 16-10. A balanced attack full of crisp passing allowed seven different Duhawks to find the back of the net, including three who finished with multiple goals, led by senior Kaitlyn Kutsch's seven tallies.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Nine days after their season opener, the Duhawks continued MWLC play against Cornell (0-4).
  • All it took was 91 seconds for Kutsch to find the back of the net, igniting what would turn out to be an all-out offensive party for Loras in the first half.
  • After another strike from Kutsch, junior Anna Schwalbe added her first of the season, driving hard through the lane to find an open shot.
  • Less than five minutes into the half, sophomore AnnaRose Einarsen made it 4-0 Duhawks with her first collegiate goal after making a long run through the offensive zone and straight to goal.
  • A pair of goals from sophomore Sarah Hanson sandwiched Kutsch's third of the half, which made it 7-0 Loras less than 10 minutes into the game.
  • Much of the Duhawks' early success came as a result of their ability to control possession off of the restarts at midfield. Loras collected six of the first eight draw controls on the night.
  • A Cornell timeout did little to slow the offense, but did manage to take the Duhawks out of their rhythm just enough, as the Rams ended the goalless drought at the 19:20 mark with a goal by Caitlyn St. Marie.
  • With a comfortable lead at 8-1, head coach Emily Goetz was able to utilize the depth of her bench and keep her starters fresh.
  • Off the bench, senior Shaunna Weber collected her first career assist on goal by junior Hannah Nelson.
  • The career firsts continued for Loras as senior Nadia Duarte found twine for the first time in her career at the 15:21 mark, making it 11-1 in favor of the Purple & Gold.
  • Cornell slowed the bleeding and kept the Duhawks off the board the remainder of the half while scoring twice, sending the game to halftime with Loras in front, 11-3.
  • Second-half adjustments from Cornell sparked a revamped offensive and defensive strategy, resulting in both sides going goal-for-goal through the first six minutes.
  • While the Rams found greater success in the second half, it was not enough to diminish the substantial lead that the Duhawks had built in the first half.
  • Strong possession from Loras down the stretch was key in limiting scoring chances for Cornell.
  • After nabbing her first career assist in the first half, Weber etched her name into the goal column with her strike late in the second half. From near midfield, Hanson launched a deep pass, connecting with Weber, who with a quick move eluded her defender and opened a clear lane to goal.
  • Despite facing a nine-goal deficit, the Rams refused to cave, scoring three times in the waning minutes.
  • Sophomore Ashley McGee earned her first win of the season, recording eight saves collecting two ground balls.
  • Freshman Molly Dougherty was effective in the midfield, causing four turnovers and adding four ground balls.
  • As a team, the Duhawks fired 30 of their 36 shots on target, peppering Cornell goalkeeper Dana Kuenzi all night.
  • The draw control belonged to Loras, which played a significant role in how the game played out. The Duhawks corralled 22 of the 28 draw controls, the highest total since the 2015 season opener against Carthage, in which Loras had 17.
