DULUTH, Minn. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team opened their weekend in Duluth, Minn. with an exciting 1–0 win in double overtime over St. Olaf. After trading chances throughout the course of the match, junior
Lauren Bolnius headed in a Duhawk corner with 35 seconds left in the final overtime period. Loras improves to 3–0–0, which matches the best start since the 2013 season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
FIRST HALF
- Loras spent most of the first 15 minutes of the match inside St. Olaf's end, creating many chances with the first shot on goal coming from sophomore Elizabeth Mills. The Brimfield, Ill. native had the ball at the top of the box and cut the ball to her right foot creating space to strike it on goal, only to have it saved.
- Mills again created a scoring chance for her team when St. Olaf tried clearing the ball out of their box in the air. The ball went right to Mills where she one-timed her shot back on goal but was denied.
- The Duhawk defense suffocated the Oles attack early on who did not register a shot until the 27th minute. The drought came to an end after Grace Bestler delivered a free kick on target and was denied by senior Maria Siebels.
- Loras earned a free kick of their own in the 37th minute of play, 20 yards out on the far side of the pitch. This prime chance went to waste, though, when Mills sailed her strike over the crossbar.
- With the first half winding to a close, the Oles took a throw in and possessed near the top of the box. St. Olaf's Sarah Fisco attempted to sneak her shot inside the near post, but once again Siebels was there to keep her clean-sheet bid intact.
SECOND HALF
- The second half did not see much offensive action from either side until Loras earned a corner in the 73rd minute and junior Riley O'Neill served the ball across the face of goal with no one there to get a head on it.
- The Duhawks almost found the go-ahead goal when Riley O'Neill served a free kick into the box, but an Ole defender was first to the ball, sending the header back on her own goal but was saved by the crossbar.
- Each side increased its pressure looking for the go-ahead goal and St. Olaf in the process received a corner during the 79th minute. The ball was served well into the box, but senior Hanna Burgmeier was there to head it away from danger.
- The Oles stayed in the attack with Mackenzie Schoustra ripping a shot though traffic inside the box. The ball was hit hard, but Siebels was there with firm hands to save it with no rebound.
- With only seconds remaining in regulation, the Oles earned a free kick just inside the half line on the Loras side. The ball was served in deep into the box where Burgmeier was there again to clear it away and send the match to overtime with the sides level at 0–0.
FIRST OVERTIME
- Abby Stets got the Oles offensive attack going in the 93rd minute when she ran onto the ball and attempted to beat Siebels to the near post. Siebels rotated towards the post to put herself in position, only to have Stets' shot miss wide left.
- St. Olaf was on the doorstep of an overtime win when a ball was crossed towards the near post at the six yard box of Loras. A pack of players was there to meet the ball and Fisco won the foot-race, flicking the ball on net but was met by another save by Siebels.
SECOND OVERTIME
- After the Oles controlled much of the first overtime period, the Duhawks responded with a chance in the 102nd minute when junior Maura Walsh dribbled on the near sideline to the top of the box and fired her shot towards goal, missing wide and to the left of the target
- Schoustra was involved in the action again during the 105th minute when she crossed a ball from the far sideline, connecting with Stets as she leaped and attempted to head it on goal, but the weak header was easily corralled by Siebels.
- In the last two minutes of the match, the Duhawks earned a pair corner kicks. After missing on the first, junior Gretchen Schutz crossed sent her second attempt into the box where junior Stephanie Harpenau flicked the ball on and connected with Bolnius who delivered the knockout blow, beating Julie Johnson, lifting the Duhawks to to the 1–0 win in extra time.
KEY STATS
Loras won the corner kick battle, earning five to St. Olaf's one. While they didn't capitalize until the very end, it was Schutz's delivery in extra time that connected with Bolnius that earned the Duhawks the win.
FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Maria Siebels I The St. Pete's, Minn. native earned her third consecutive shutout of the season and completed the match with eight saves that set a season-high. Siebels made numerous big stops throughout the match and especially in overtime to keep her team incontention for the win.
