WHITEWATER, Wis. (Duhawks.com) - After falling behind by two goals less than 15 minutes into Wednesday's match against UW-Whitewater, the Loras women's soccer team battled valiantly in its comeback effort. Thanks to two goals from junior
Gretchen Schutz, the Duhawks leveled in the 71st minute, only to concede the go-ahead goal to the Warhawks minutes later.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
FIRST HALF
- UW-Whitewater received a corner of their own in the 5th minute and the service was toward the penalty area. The ball bounced around until it ricocheted to the foot of Marie Lesperance whose shot hit the crossbar.
- In the 7th minute, another loose ball in the box was claimed by Mackenzie Serbousek who delivered a strike that beat senior goalkeeper Maria Siebels to give the Warhawks the early 1–0 lead.
- Three minutes later, UW-Whitewater struck again when Marie Lesperance ran onto a through ball from Kaci Schonert. Once Lesperance possessed the ball in the box, she beat Siebels far post giving her team the 2–0 lead.
- In the 16th minute a failed clearance by the Warhawks fell to junior Maura Walsh outside the box who hit a shot on her second touch over the crossbar.
- UW-Whitewater earned a free kick in the 43rd minute and the service came into the box, but Siebels got up and punched it out to keep the score at 2–0 heading into halftime.
SECOND HALF
- The Duhawks refused to give in despite the two-goal deficit and came out of the halftime break with menace. In the 46th minute, a Schutz corner kick was played across the face of goal, but no one was able to tap it in on the doorstep.
- With Loras deep in the attacking third, senior Lizzy McWhinney served a threatening ball from the near sideline into the box that Sarah Klimisch went up and grabbed, diffusing a scoring chance for Loras.
- The Duhawks finally got on the board in the 53rd minute on a free kick from 30 yards out. Schutz went for gold and received her dividend, blasting a perfect shot into the top corner where Sarah Klimisch could only watch it sail into the net to cut the deficit to one.
- The Duhawks kept the pressure on and in the 66th minute had another scoring opportunity when sophomore Elizabeth Mills crossed a ball into the box for Walsh who then dropped it for senior Madie Avery. Her shot nearly tickled the twine, but she was denied by the crossbar.
- Building off the resurgence of energy from Schutz's first goal, Loras was rewarded in the 71st minute as Mills connected with Schutz and on her secon touch, struck home her shot from 25 yards out past Klimisch to tie the match, 2–2.
- The Warhawks quickly reclaimed their lead on a corner mintues later as a service from Emily Mouille was crossed towards the near post and Devon Polk flicked it on frame beating Siebels.
- In the 86th minute, it appeared that Schutz had a hat-trick when she ripped a hard diving shot on net. Klimisch was there to make the initial stop, but the ball came loose through her legs. Before it could cross the line, Klimisch dove on the loose ball behind her to quell the opportunity.

Loras will utilize the extended break before returning to conference play with a match against the University of Dubuque. The Spartans lost to UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday night, 1-0, bringing their record to 5-4-1.
