MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Sophomore
Quin Gilliam opened the dual with a win at 285# and freshman
Guy Patron Jr. lit the fuse on the firecracker as the No. 21 Loras wrestling team upset No. 11 Cornell on Thursday night, 19-16, for its ninth consecutive dual victory. Trailing 16-13, Patron Jr. scored a first period pin at 197# to send the Duhawks to their third dual win over a ranked team this season.
WINNERS
Quin Gilliam | 285# | Shreveport, La. | C.E. Byrd
Thursday's dual began at 285# and Gilliam provided the stability that he has grown accustomed to at the end of the dual. Gilliam scored the only takedown of the bout in the opening period and scored an escape in the third to win 3-2 for his 11th consecutive victory.
Michael Triplett | 133# | Normal, Ill. | University
With the dual tied at 3-all, Triplett had little trouble getting to his underhooks and took control of the bout from the opening whistle. Cornell's Nathan Shank earned his escape and grabbed a takedown before the end of the first to take the lead into the second. After conceding an escape, Triplett went back to the underhooks and tossed Shank to the mat and scored a four-point near fall and took the lead at 8-3. A pair of takedowns coupled a four-point near fall and escape from Triplett erased any doubt of a Shank comeback, winning by major decision, 17-5.
Jimmy Davis | 157# | Aurora, Ill. | Waubonsie Valley
A quick start from Davis saw the junior open a 6-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and a four-point near fall. Cornell's Nic Jarvis dug in and fought his way back, benefiting from a trio of stalling calls on Davis, bringing Davis' lead to 9-3. A wild third period saw Jarvis score five points in the comeback bid, but Davis held on to improve to 19-1 this season.
Awais Arain | 184# | Plainfield, Ill. | Plainfield North
Trailing 16-10 heading into the second to last bout, Arain took the mat knowing that his team needed points out of the junior. Arain took control early with a first period takedown for the 2-0 lead. After choosing bottom to start the second, Cornell's Brian Cristion rode out Arain for the entire period before scoring an early escape to begin the third. Nearing overtime, Arain took the lead for good with 15 seconds to go in the final period with a takedown, winning 4-2.
Guy Patron Jr. | 197# | Harvey, La. | Jesuit
Thursday's dual came down to the freshman at 197# for the Duhawks in Patron Jr. Neeed at least a decision to send the dual to criteria, Patron Jr. left no doubt as he proceeded to throw Cornell's Ben Bergen to the mat and immediately to his back before sealing the win for Loras with the pin.
