IOWA CITY, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The 2017 opened for the Loras baseball team on a grand stage against the University of Iowa at Banks Field on Wednesday, falling 8-1. Junior
Aidan Wojciehowski shined for the Duhawks in relief, throwing five innings of no-hit ball with three walks.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Inning
- Sophomore Austin Konagel reached base on an Iowa fielding error, but was stranded at second after back-to-back strikeouts by the Duhawks.
- In the home half, Iowa loaded the bases with two outs before a triple to the right field wall from Matt Hoeg gave the Hawkeyes a 3-0 lead.
Second Inning
- Iowa tacked on two more to its lead after a series of three consecutive singles. Junior Brad Schwind managed to limit the damage to two after forcing the Hawkeyes into an inning-ending double play.
Seventh Inning
- Trailing 6-0, the Duhawks showed signs of life with an infield single from senior Tommy Johnson. On the very next pitch, Johnson took off for second to move into scoring position.
- Sophomore Danny Paluch drilled his second double of the day to right field, scoring Johnson easily from second.
Eighth Inning
- Loras' defensive miscues allowed Iowa to add two runs in the eighth for an 8-1 lead.
NOTABLES
- Iowa improved to 14-1 against Loras all-time
- According to the Iowa Athletic Communications staff, Wednesday was the earliest home game played by the Hawkeyes in program history
- Paluch recorded his eighth career multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 with one RBI
- Prior to Wednesday, the longest outing in Wojciehowski's career was 3.1 innings
