DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - In a matchup of MCVL Western Division foes, the Loras men's volleyball team fell to fourth-ranked Carthage by a 3-0 score on Friday night (25-17, 25-20, 25-17). Sophomores
Leo Peters and
Aaron Miller combined for 13 kills and a .313 attack percentage to lead the Duhawk offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One
- Both sides jockeyed for position from the outset of the opening frame, but the Red Men staked their first significant lead at the 12-7 mark after a run of three consecutive points.
- Back-to-back Carthage kills extended its lead to 19-12, prompting a timeout from head coach Jeremy Thornburg.
- The Red Men scored six of the next 11 points to take set one, 25-17.
Set Two
- A block from sophomore Austin Kuchenbecker forced a Carthage timeout with the Duhawks within two at 13-11.
- Loras continued to keep the second set close, prompting a second timeout by the Red Men, coming after a kill by junior Dylan Ross at the 22-19 mark.
- After the break in action, Carthage ripped off three of the final four points of the set to dispatch the Duhawks in the second frame, 25-20.
Set Three
- A kill from sophomore Alfredo Lopez helped to maintain an early margin for Loras in the third set, leading 7-5.
- The Red Men got back on track quickly, using a run of four in-a-row at this juncture to take a 9-7 lead.
- Continuing to open up this margin after the break, Carthage eventually finished off Loras in the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
