Women's Soccer Strikes Early to Sink the Spartans

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team scored twice in the first 10 minutes on Saturday, cruising to its third straight win, defeating Dubuque, 2-nil. Senior Maura Walsh tallied her third goal of the season and sixth game-winner of her career as the Duhawks improved to 6-1-1 and 1-0-0 in the Iowa Conference.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
- Loras wasted no time jumping out to an early lead as Walsh finished off a sequence of passes from junior Elizabeth Mills and freshmen Brynn Jacobi
- Less than five minutes later, the Duhawks found the back of the net once again as senior Gretchen Schutz capitalized on a loose ball inside the six for her sixth of the season
- Six minutes into the second half, the Spartans had their best scoring opportunity of the game … Senior defender Sydney Wright came up clutch for the Duhawks as she blocked scoring chances back-to-back ­­inside the box

NOTABLES
- The Duhawks shutout the Spartans for the ninth time in their 23rd all-time meeting
- After scoring her sixth goal of the season, Schutz needs just one more goal to match her career-best goal total, set a season ago
- With her goal in the first half, senior Maura Walsh totaled her 11th point of the season, pushing her career point total to 44 … She is six points away from surpassing her current career-best point total, set last season
-Sophomore keeper Kaylee Coble recorded her third shutout of the season, stopping all three Spartan shots on target
-Mills recorded her 45th point of her career with the assist on Walsh's goal

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME – LAUREN BOLNIUS
Although she did not record a point, senior Lauren Bolnius provided a major offensive presence for the Duhawks on the pitch. The Roselle, Ill. native totaled three shots on the day, two which were on target.
 
UP NEXT
The Duhawks look to pick up where they left off tomorrow afternoon as they take on Carleton in non-conference action. The Knights enter with a 5-1-0 record and Sunday will be the third meeting all-time between the two sides. Kickoff in the Rock Bowl is set for 2 p.m.
