Duhawks Tally 29 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Beavers

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Twenty-nine runs on 28 hits fueled the Loras baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Buena Vista on Tuesday. The Duhawks moved to two games ahead of the Beavers, winning 22-3 and 7-4, improving to 21-10 this season and 10-8 in the IIAC. Tyler Tomaka tied the program record for saves in a season, recording his sixth in game two.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Game One
- Loras let Buena Vista know right from the get-go that last weekend's sweep at the hands of Luther was a fluke, racing out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning
- The first four batters reached base and the Duhawks held a 3-0 lead before the first out was recorded
- After three more runs came across to score in the next two innings, Loras erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Richard Bryza and Thomas - Greffly … Danny Weis rudely greeted the new pitcher into the game with a two-RBI triple that opened a 14-2 lead … All seven runs scored in the fourth came with two outs
- Koester's double to left center in the seventh scored Konagel and Weis
- The offensive barrage continued into the sixth where Loras poured it on, even with much of the starting lineup getting an early change at the bottom … Seven more runs came across to score, highlighted by Koester's third and fourth RBIs of the game on a double to left center
- Ben Milks improved to 2-0 while Nolan Even pitched the final 3.0 innings to record his second save of the season

Game Two
- The Beavers manufactured the first run of the game without a hit to take the early lead
- Loras responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the first, which began with Weis' RBI double … He would later score on a Jake Oglesby sacrifice fly
- Buena Vista tied the game on a first-pitch two-run home run to right field in the fourth
- A walk and a single to Koester and Oglesby set the table for Loras … After a wild pitch moved the runners up 90 feet, Koester and Oglesby scored on back-to-back ground outs to regain the lead at 5-3
- In the bottom of the fourth with a runner on third, Weis greeted the new relief pitcher for the Beavers with a single to center field, scoring Fennelly
- Aidan Wojciehowski was up to his normal self, throwing 4.1 innings of two-hit ball while striking out four
- Tyler Tomaka came on with one out in the eighth and recorded the final five outs for his sixth save of the season, tying Jeremy Gerardy's single-season record from 2013

NOTABLES
- Koester recorded his 100th career hit in game one … His four-hit game in the opener was the first of his career and the fourth Duhawk to post a four-hit game this season
- Weis needs two hits to tie his single-season high of 45, set a year ago
- Wojciehowski's ERA dropped back down below 1.00 and now sits at 0.87 this season to go along with a 0.74 WHIP
- Loras improved to 7-1 this season when scoring in the first inning, 4-0 when hitting two-or-more home runs
- Through 31 games, the Duhawks have outscored their opponents 213-133 this season, a gap of 80 runs
- Austin Konagel extended his streak to 31 games in which he has safely reached base

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME - Ryan Koester
- First career four-hit game, joined the 100-hit club and drove in four runs, that was all in a day's work for Ryan Koester in game one

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME - Danny Weis
- Weis was the only player to record an extra-base hit and the Joliet Catholic prep was responsible for both of Loras' on Tuesday, posting a double and a triple

UP NEXT
