ELMHURST, Ill. (November 9, 2019) – The Loras College women's basketball team opened their season on the road as they took on the Elmhurst College Bluejays. The Duhawks finished on top by a score of 94-59. Tonight's 94-59 win marks the largest winning margin between Loras and Elmhurst with the Duhawks holding a 7-0 record.
Trailing by two early in the game,
Marissa Schroeder drove the lane to complete a layup to tie the score at 7-7. Schroeder's layup started a 10-0 run in the first quarter before the Bluejays battled back to bring the scoring deficit to within two points. Loras brought their lead to fifteen after
Macenzie Kraemer laid a shot off the backboard for two-point layup to take the score to 33-18. Elmhurst brought the Duhawk lead to eight after a layup and a three pointer and Kraemer finished the half with a buzzer beater jumper to go into halftime with a 44-34 lead.
Loras senior
Riley Eckhart sparked the offense again in the second half by scoring on back-to-back possessions. Later in the third quarter, Elmhurst went on a run of their own to bring the Duhawk lead to six points. Loras brought the offense back together as they responded with an 11-0 run with five of the eleven points coming from the free throw line.
Loras headed into the fourth quarter with a 65-48 lead and shortly extended their lead to 34 points. The Loras defense stood strong as well, not allowing the Bluejays to score until 6:28 remained in the game.
Kraemer finished with 25 points while Schroeder finished with 16, and
Kari Fitzpatrick finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Loras out-rebounded Elmhurst 37-27 and scored 31 points off of the Bluejay's 22 turnovers.
The Duhawks will host the Washington University (Mo.) Bears on Nov.15Â for their home opener and first game of the Loras Tip-Off Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 PM.
