Sept. 21, 2019 – Despite multiple shining moments on defense, offensive woes proved troublesome for the Loras College football team on Saturday as the Duhawks fell to the Coe College Kohawks (2-1, 1-0 A-R-C) in the first American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) matchup of the season.
Coe notched the first score of the game ten minutes into the first quarter with a touchdown and took a 14-0 lead with 7:10 remaining in the half. The Duhawks needed something to happen on offense and that's what
Noah Sigwarth did, connecting with
Jake Burgmeier for a 14 yard pass. Burgmeier shook the tackle and dove into the endzone over the heads of multiple Coe players for the touchdown. Nicholas Farfan sent the extra point between the posts to put Loras on the board.
The Duhawks' defense came out of the locker room ready to make plays as
Brett Matye intercepted a pass from Kohawk quarterback Quentin White to give Loras the ball back with 2:21 remaining in the third quarter.
Jack Foley opened the fourth quarter with an interception at the Kohawks' 46-yard line to set the Duhawks up with a much needed possession. Though the Duhawks had to punt, they got the ball right back after
Brandon Ahlgrim forced Cody Russell to fumble and Matye was there to recover it.
Loras was able to hold its opponent scoreless in the fourth quarter but struggled to convert possessions into points, ultimately suffering its first conference loss of the season.
Dwayne Emilus led the Duhawks with 79 receiving yards on five receptions while
Trey Simmons had 74 yards on five targets. Brandon Neiemeier,
Mason Morris, and
Riley Larson had two pass breakups each and
Danny Kamm was a force on defense with nine solo tackles.
Bryce Sinn and
Chris Miller each had two tackles for loss while
Tyler Poggenpohl and
Jabari James Turner-Smith had one quarterback hurry each.
Trey Simmons tallied 105 kickoff return yards.
The Duhawks (1-2, 0-1 A-R-C) continue conference play with its first game on the road, traveling to Pella, Iowa to face the Central College Dutch. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and links to live in-game coverage can be found HERE.
