Sept. 24, 2019 – Balanced play across the court lifted the RV Loras College women's volleyball team to victory on Tuesday evening as the Duhawks defeated the Coe College Kohawks (8-9, 1-1 A-R-C) in three straight-sets to open American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) match play with a win.
Loras held the Kohawks under ten in the opening set, taking a 19-7 lead thanks to efficient hitting from
Kelly Boge,
Abby Allgeyer,
Jackie Alberto,
Kendra Cave and
Moira Mixan. Coe tried to get back into the set late with two kills from its leading hitter, Kate Tidman, but Cave closed the door on the Kohawks' comeback with a kill to win the first set, 25-14.
The Duhawks' defense helped the team come back from a 4-1 deficit to lead 15-11 following blocks from
Kayla Kinney, Alberto, and Allgeyer. The lead grew more after the Kohawks surrendered three straight errors and opened the door for Mixan to serve up an ace and Jessalyn Rolling to come away with back-to-back kills, taking a 22-21 lead. Coe tacked on three more to hold the Duhawks away from set point a little longer, but it was no use as Kinney added two kills to win the set, 25-15.
The third set began much like the first two as the Duhawks took the lead off kills from Kinney and stellar serving by Kystal Tranel, but the Kohawks held on, forcing Loras to commit three straight errors and took the lead, 16-13. Coe continued to add on points on the board but the Duhawks' patient and unphased offense responded with kills from Kinney and Alberto before the duo teamed up for the match-winning block at 26-24.
Kinney tallied 14 kills while Mixan added three aces to her season total and led the team with 15 digs. Alberto had four blocks and Kinney had three. As a team, Loras played tenacious defense both on the serve receive and at the net and finished the match with a .239 hitting percentage, only committing 13 attacking errors while scoring 39 kills.
Loras (13-4, 1-0 A-R-C) takes a break from conference play for the weekend as the Duhawks head down the road to the University of Dubuque for a pair of matches against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday, Sept. 28.
