STORM LAKE, Iowa (Feb. 5, 2020)- The No. 11 Loras College women's basketball team (19-2, 10-2 A-R-C) defeated American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) opponent Buena Vista University (1-19, 0-10 A-R-C) 70-50 keeping their record perfect against the Beavers this season.
The Duhawks won the opening tip-off and quickly got on the scoreboard with a layup from
Macenzie Kraemer off the pass from
Kari Fitzpatrick. The first quarter was a back and forth affair as the Beavers answered every made basket from the Duhawks with one of their own and took the lead at the 4:26 mark and held onto it for nearly two minutes until
Courtney Schnoor tied the game up 11-11 with 2:17 remaining. However, Buena Vista would eventually regain the lead making the score 12-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Beavers came out strong in the second quarter extending their lead two four points after a made three-point basket but the Duhawks answered on their next offensive possession with a layup by
Madison Haslow. Loras kept chipping away at the Beavers lead and eventually narrowed the margin to just one point after a three-point basket from Jamie Ryan. On Buena Vista's next possession Ryan got the steal and dished it off to Schnoor for the and-one layup to regain the lead by a score of 23-21. The Duhawks would carry that momentum forward to go on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to six points with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter.
Riley Eckhart scored the last basket of the quarter for the Duhawks making the score 31-27 heading into the locker room.
It was very apparent at the start of the third quarter that the Duhawks were not satisfied with their four-point lead at the half as Schnoor scored the first bucket of the half. Fitzpatrick would then lead the Duhawks on an 11-point-run scoring nine of those 11 points making two three-point baskets and an and-one layup making the score 42-27. The Duhawks took advantage of the third quarter of play outscoring the Beavers 22-9 and ending the quarter ahead 53-36 after a jump shot from Kraemer and a three-point basket from Ryan.
The Duhawks kept their foot on the gas extending their lead to 28 points after a pull-up jumper from
Cierra Bachmann but the Beavers quickly answered with a three-point basket. On the Duhawks' next offensive possession Ryan made another three-point basket reestablishing Loras's 28-point lead allowing the Duhawks to sub in order to get more players experience. The Duhawks continued to take advantage of the opportunities that were put in front of them as Allie Brownson and
Alli Udelhofen both made their free throws to ensure the Loras lead was out of reach from the Beavers making the final score 70-50.
The Duhawks finished the game with three players in double figures. Schnoor led in scoring with 22 points, Fitzpatrick tallied 15 points while Ryan added 11 points of her own coming off the bench and Eckhart led the team in rebounds with 8.
Loras returns home for another A-R-C matchup against Coe College as the Duhawks host the Kohawks on Saturday, Feb. 8. Tip-off inside the Athletic & Wellness Center is set for 2 P.M.
