Feb. 8, 2020 – The No. 11-ranked Loras College women's basketball team (20-2, 11-2 A-R-C) continued to enjoy one of the most successful seasons in program history on Saturday as the Duhawks completed the season sweep of American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) foe Coe College (12-9, 7-5 A-R-C) with a 74-53 win against the Kohawks.
The Kohawks grabbed the early lead to start the game after a three-point by Madeline Wilkins, but a jump shot by
Riley Eckhart put the Duhawks ahead 6-5 with 4:20 in the first quarter. The Kohawks took the narrow lead again off a layup, but it was the last point they would add to the board for the first ten minutes as
Marissa Schroeder,
Courtney Schnoor and Eckhart all hit layups to jump ahead by six points. Loras extended the lead with 1:11 remaining after Macenzie Kramer found an open Schroeder in the paint and Schroeder closed out the quarter for the Duhawks with a jump shot to lead 18-7.
Loras continued to pile on the points in the second quarter, scoring seven unanswered points in the first three minutes. Coe clawed back with eight points, including two three-pointers by Wilkins, but
Kari Fitzpatrick helped the Duhawks close out the first half with a 17-point lead off a three-pointer from Kraemer.
Kraemer started Loras off hot coming out of the locker room, hitting a shot beyond the arc off the assist from Fitzpatrick and putting the Duhawks ahead, 42-22. Coe was able to muster 12 points in the third quarter, but Loras held a 58-34 lead going into the final ten minutes thanks to six points from Schroeder, Kraemer and Schnoor. Eckhart drew a foul to start the fourth quarter and gave Loras its largest lead of the day, up 25 points after making her free throw. Despite Coe scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter to Loras' 16 points, the Duhawks' held a commanding lead to outlast a comeback for the Kohawks.
Kraemer had 20 points in the win while Schroeder tallied 19 and Eckhart added 13 points. Kraemer had a team-high five steals and four assists while Schroeder, Eckhart and Fitzpatrick all nabbed five rebounds.
The Duhawks look for a season sweep against crosstown rival the University of Dubuque on Wednesday, Feb. 12 with a short trip down the road into Spartan territory. Tip-off is set for 5:30 P.M.
