Noah Sigwarth became the all-time leader for passing yards and completions on Saturday in the Loras College football team's American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) matchup against the Coe College Kohawks. The Duhawks (3-4, 3-2 A-R-C) took the early lead by the Kohawks (4-2, 2-2 A-R-C) rallied back with a third quarter push to win 27-20.
The Duhawks forced the Kohawks to punt on their opening drive and capitalized on a great special teams stop by
Dustin Harris who blocked Evan Ellis' punt.
Joey Foley was right there to scoop it up on the Kohawks' 25-yard line and run it into the endzone for the touchdown. Coe responded on the next drive, picking off Sigwarth's pass which set up a 63-yard run by Chance Newton for the touchdown and knot the score 7-7 after the first quarter. Coe added another touchdown to open the second quarter with a 39-yard run by the league's leading rusher, Alphonso Soko, to pull ahead 14-7.
The Duhawks' defense held the Kohawks at bay for the remainder of the half and opened the third quarter with a 16-play, 67-yard drive, finishing with a 26-yard field goal by
Scott Talmadge to make the score 10-14 with 8:09 left in the third quarter. Loras forced a quick three-and-out for the Kohawks on the next drive and cut the score within one with another field goal by Talmadge, this time from 33 yards out after a big first-down pass from Sigwarth to
Je'Von Williams put the Duhawks in range. The Kohawks put the distance back on the board with another touchdown by Soko from 27-yards to lead 20-13 with 1:52 left in the quarter. In the final minute of the third quarter, Coe recovered a fumble and made their way downfield in a three-play, 56-yard drive resulting in Soko's third touchdown of the game to lead 27-13 heading into the fourth. Â
Coe's defense came out ready to challenge the Duhawks for the final 15 minutes, grabbing two picks but not converting on the turnovers.
Jace Gwynn helped the Duhawks flip the script on the Kohawks with 9:25 to play, intercepting Nick Casey's pass at Loras' 7-yard line to stop what could have been another touchdown and Sigwarth connected with
Marty McGovern,
Dwayne Emilus, and
Eric Hradek to get the Duhawks to the Kohawks' 28-yard line. Sigwarth then found McGovern in the endzone for a 27-yard completion and the lone passing touchdown for the Duhawks with 6:20 remaining in the game, but Coe held on for the win as time expired.
Sigwarth had 310 yards passing, bringing his career total to 6,429 with three games remaining in the season. He also has a program-best 510 career completions, surpassing Bob Kelly '18 (493) and collected his 47th career passing touchdown. Sigwarth also led the offense with 66 yards rushing, followed by Bausch with 42 and McGovern led the receivers with 77 yards and a 27-yard long grab.
Josh Jones,
Mason Morris, and
Josh Kieffer all tallied six tackles in the game with Jones posting a team-best two tackles for loss. Jones also forced a fumble and Gwynn added an interception.
The Duhawks are on the road on Saturday, Oct. 23, playing No. 11-ranked Central College (6-0, 4-0 A-R-C) in Pella. Kickoff is set for 1 P.M.
