Oct. 26, 2021 – The Loras College women's volleyball team (18-9, 5-3 A-R-C) met the Monmouth College Fighting Scots (12-13) with an unrelenting offense on Tuesday night, taking command of the match early and putting together a full-team effort to come away with a 3-0 win in the non-conference matchup.
The Duhawks jumped ahead early, 9-3, with kills by
Sara Hoskins,
Olivia Smith and
Lyndsi Wilgenbusch. A kill by
Liz Fleckenstein doubled up the Fighting Scots, 12-6 and
Cat Gleason helped the Duhawks extend the lead 15-8. Monmouth put together a late set run to challenge the Duhawks but Hoskins came away with a kill to get Loras to set point before setting up Fleckenstein for the set-winning kill to take the first, 25-17.
Fleckenstein kept it rolling to open the second set, posting two straight kills before Mixan and Gleason came away with two to give Loras a 4-0 lead. Mixan helped spark a 5-0 run to lead 10-2 before two kills from Wilgenbusch ignited a 7-0 run to put Loras up 17-4. The Duhawks continued to dominate and not let up on the Fighting Scots in the second as
Krystal Tranel served up an ace at 23-6 and Hoskins and Gleason teamed up at the net for a block to get Loras to set point. Monmouth rattled back three points to stop the run but
James Keefe finished the set with a kill off the hands of Hoskins for a dominant 25-9 victory.
Monmouth kept it close to open the third set, tying it up 4-4 and keeping the Duhawks in sight. The Fighting Scots came back within one, 9-10, off a block on Wilgenbusch's hit but Gleason responded back to keep the distance. Loras took a 20-13 lead off a 4-0 run with kills from Fleckenstein and Gleason and closed out the set with a 5-0 run with kills by Keefe and Gleason to take the set, 25-14 and collect its third-straight three-set sweep.
Mixan moved up to tied for third all-time for career service aces with three more on the night, bringing her total to 140. Gleason also had a good night serving with two of her own and Tranel had 20 digs.
Sara Hoskins had 29 assists, helping Gleason to a team-high ten kills and the Duhawks hitting a .282 hitting percentage through the three sets including a match-best .314 in the second set. Loras had 44 kills on the evening, limiting the Fighting Scots to 19, and had five service aces.
Loras is back in action at Ripon College on Friday, Oct. 29 with first serve at Doc Weiske Memorial Gymnasium set for 7 P.M.
