CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Dec. 1, 2021) – After a pair of top-25 games a week prior, the Loras College women's basketball team (4-2, 1-1 A-R-C) avenged its 2020-21 American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) tournament loss to the Coe College Kohawks (3-3, 0-2 A-R-C) on Wednesday in a tightly-contested rematch that saw the Duhawks come away with a 64-52 victory on the road for its first A-R-C win of the season.
Madison Haslow opened the scoring early for the Duhawks with a three-pointer off the opening tip and
Sami Martin joined in with a layup on the next possession to help the Duhawks set the tone in the opening minute. The Kohawks rallied back to tie the game 7-7 at the six minute mark but free-throws by
Emerson Whittenbaugh and Martin helped Loras take back the lead. A three-pointer by Coe brought them within two-points with under three to play in the first quarter but it was Martin again who gave Loras a six point cushion, 20-14, with one minute left. The Kohawks closed out the first quarter with a three-pointer to stay within striking distance heading into the next ten minutes of play.
Cierra Bachmann started the second quarter with a jump shot to give Loras momentum and the spark helped the Duhawks limit the Kohawks to only six points, resulting in 13 percent shooting from the field and 12 percent from three-point range. Loras kept Coe scoreless from the final four minutes of the half with
Allie Brownson,
Megan Murray, Bachmann, and Martin all posting points to help Loras to a 35-23 lead heading into the locker room.
The Kohawks came back from a lackluster second-quarter to break a six-minute scoring drought with eight unanswered points to cut Loras' lead 37-31 with 5:30 on the clock. Both teams had quick possessions with four minutes in the third with the Kohawks hitting a three-pointer to pull within four before Whittenbaugh and Bachmann kept it going to take a 45-39 lead going into the final ten minutes of play.
Coe came out strong to open the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to two with 8:26 left in the game. Three points by Whittenbaugh and a layup for Martin helped Loras to a 50-45 lead until Coe came back with a layup that brought them within one, 51-51 with three minutes remaining. The Duhawks were not backing down as a jump shot by Martin sparked a 12-1 run to shut the door on the Kohawks' comeback, winning 64-52.
Martin posted her first double-double of the season with 20 points, going 8-12 from the field, and 11 rebounds while Bachmann had a productive night at the line, making eight free throws on her way to 19 points. Haslow had a team-high three assists and added eight rebounds. Loras scored 34 points in the paint and shot 42 percent from the field, holding the edge against the Kohawk, as well as 36 rebounds while Coe had the advantage in offensive rebounds, grabbing nine to help add eight second chance points.
The Duhawks continue conference action on the road at Buena Vista University on Saturday, Dec. 4. Tip-off in Storm Lake, Iowa is set for 2 P.M.
