ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Apr. 17, 2021) – Led by
Mike Jasa establishing a new school record in the 800-meter run and the 4-by-400-meter relay team securing the top time in Division III, the No. 7-ranked Loras College men's track and field team finished second at the Augustana College Meet of Champions on Saturday and celebrated multiple season and lifetime best performances for the Duhawks.
The Duhawks had an exciting showing in the 800-meter run as Jasa set a new program record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.00 to hold the national lead and
Wyatt Kelly ran a personal-best time of 1:53.54 to finish third.
Josh Smith won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.75 seconds, a lifetime best and currently fifth in program history and ninth in Division III.
Jake Willkomm finished third in the 400-meter dash, running 49.92 seconds and
Shamari Scott led a one-two finish for Loras in the 400-meter hurdles, running a season-best time of 54.05 seconds to win the event and rank fifth in Division III, followed by
Ted Kruse with a lifetime best time of 55.23 seconds.
Luke Guttormson led another strong performance for Loras' distance squad in the 5,000-meter run, placing second with a time of 14:37.42, good for seventh on Loras' all-time list and nationally, while four other Duhawks ran personal bests in the event. In the throws, Willkomm scored a third-place finish in the javelin, throwing 43.10 meters, and in the jumps,
Derik Bunten placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.27 meters. The 4-by-400-meter relay of Scott, Smith, Kruse and Jasa ran 3:13.82, the sixth-fastest time in program history and currently the time to beat in Division III to end the meet with a huge win.
The Duhawks placed second at the meet with 162.5 points. Wartburg College won the meet with 203 points while other American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) teams Luther College and Simpson College finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
Loras will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the Drake Relays, competing against top-competition from all three Divisions, beginning Thursday, Apr. 22 at Drake University.
