May 8, 2021- The Loras College baseball team (21-13, 16-12 A-R-C) finished off the series against Luther College (26-10, 22-6 A-R-C) and earned their 21st win of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Duhawks dropped the first game of the day but came back and won a nail-biter 1-0 in the final game of the series, sending the senior class off with a win for their last time out on their home field.
Â
Senior day was one to remember for the Duhawks as they closed out the series against Luther. In the first inning
Davis Pasco shut down the Norse in order before the Duhawks were up in the bottom of the first, with
Luke Fennelly getting on with single then getting to second on the throw. He advanced to third but was left on but Pasco made up for it on the mound, shutting down the side to start the second. In the top of the fourth inning the Norse would pop off with six runs and added another in the fifth to push a seven-run lead. Though the Norse held on through the seventh, in the bottom of the inning,
Jack Enright led off with a walk to get the Duhawks on base and a pitch later
Tyler Pransky singled to right giving the Duhawks momentum going into Game Two.
Â
Fennelly, Pransky and
Daniel Rogers each had a hit in the game and Pranksy was 1-1 at the plate. Senior
Ricky Leske reached on a pair of walks and Fennelly came away with a stolen base. Pasco struck out three batters in four innings and
Hunter Fallon recorded a strikeout and two runs in three innings at the mound.
Â
The Duhawks put on a pitching clinic in Game Two as
Ryan Wohlers had the start on the mound for the Duhawks and was deep in a pitching battle with the Norse's pitcher in the opening innings. In the second, senior
Bill Luzzo doubled to left giving the Duhawks the spark they needed and added another in the fourth. Â Wohlers kept cruising through six innings with no earned runs and with nothing brewing on offense for either team, someone was due for a big hit which came from Rogers off a solo home run in the sixth to put the Duhawks on top, 1-0.
Â
Luzzo led the team with two hits while Rogers,
Max Cullen and
Joe Egan each added one. Fennelly added a stolen base and Wohlers waved five batters in his six innings, allowing three hits and no runs.
Ethan Peters came in to relieve Wohlers and get the three-inning save. Peters improved to 2-0 on the season with six strikeouts and not allowing a hit while getting his fifth save on the season.
Â
The Duhawks wrap up regular season action beginning Tuesday, May 11 against the University of Dubuque. First pitch for Tuesday's double header is set for 4 P.M.
