CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Jan. 22, 2022) - The No. 2 Loras College wrestling team (9-0, 4-0 A-R-C) kept their win streak rolling at the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Duals on Saturday as they went toe-to-toe with the Norse from Luther College and the No. 3-ranked Coe College Kohawks. After breezing by the Norse in the first matchup of the day, the Duhawks battled back from a 12-0 deficit to take down the Kohawks 19-18 and remain undefeated on the season.
The first dual of the day saw the Duhawks square up with the Norse, with No. 13-ranked
Jared Hensley getting things going at 125 lbs. against Christian Chavez, earning four points right out of the jump with a 10-1 major decision. At 133 lbs.,
Aiden Evans followed with a 1:14 pin victory over Brier Babin to collect six points while No. 9-ranked
Jalen Schropp kick-started a run of three straight major decisions with a 16-3 win over Ryan Crippe in the 141 lb. matchup.
Daniel Ruiz, who currently sits at No. 8 in the 149 lb. class, earned an 8-0 major decision over Chase Kmosena while No. 7
Zeke Smith followed suit with an 11-1 major decision over Braeden Hendel at 157 lbs..
At 165 lbs., No. 14-ranked
Gabe Fiser grabbed the first of three-straight falls for the Duhawks, pinning Kamden Goering in the second period while No. 4-ranked 174 lb. grappler
Jacob Krakow pinned Skylar Shuman in 1:45. At 184 lbs., No. 2-ranked
Shane Liegel brought the Duhawks' lead to 40-0 after a 3:55 pin against Elijah Mitchell before Luther's Donovan Corn grabbed their only victory of the dual at 197 lbs.
Brady Vogel closed out the match with an 8-7 victory by decision at 285 lbs. over Logan Kennedy to see the Duhawks dominate the Norse with a final score of 43-4.
The second matchup of the day featured two of the top three ranked wrestling programs in the country with the Duhawks meeting up with the Kohawks from Coe College.
Coe took the first three matchups of the dual to go ahead 12-0 but No. 8 Ruiz ignited the Duhawks with a 3-2 win by decision over No. 11 Riley Wright. No. 7 Smith brought the Duhawks brought the Duhawks within three of the Kohawks in the next match as he collected six team points with a second period pin over Brady Henderson, who entered the dual ranked No. 15. In the 165 lbs. matchup, No. 14 Fiser tied the score up at 12 apiece with a 7-5 decision over LJ Henderson.
No. 4 Krakow and No. 2 Liegel picked up back-to-back wins for the Duhawks at 174 lbs. and 184 lbs., respectively, with Krakow earning a win by a 13-6 major decision over Tristan Westphal and Liegel winning by a 6-2 decision over No. 9 Ryan Schott.
With the score at 19-12 in favor of the Duhawks with just two matches to go, the Duhawks fell by decision in the final two but held on to take the 19-18 victory and extend their win streak to nine in dual action.
The Duhawks return to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 29 as they host the Loras Open. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM inside the Graber Center. A reminder for all spectators that per Loras College campus safety guidelines that masks are required at all times while indoors.
